The Sound of It

by Mike McLaren, posted 07 Aug 2008 12:06 PM

I started working seriously on cutting some new tracks for a CD, since it's been over two years since my last collection of songs, but I kept getting hung up in the sound coming out of my speakers. Everything I recorded sounded muffled with a thin veil of mist. Some of the tracks are posted here, and others I just let go.

During the last few months I've been reading up on home recording. I discovered that I have been configuring my software incorrectly. Every way that I turned the dials is every way I shouldn't have turned the dials. Now I'm of a mind to re-record everything I've done.

But I also discovered that my speakers (my computer is also my stereo, with Advent speakers and a subwoofer) have a color to them. What I hear in my studio is not what I hear on my wife's computer, which is not what I hear on the little Alarm/CD/Radio player stashed in my closet.

Now I'm stymied. How do I get a sound worthy of posting on the Internet? And what is that sound?

I'm working on it.

In the meantime, drop by a gig sometimes. Live music sounds best, anyway.
