Biography

Silentium Amoris was started sometime in 2001 with lead singer/songwriter, Bryan Kroes composing simple acoustic music in the spare time between attending college and working a full time job.  The initial music was simple and usually revolved around topics of love lost or any of the other "problems" a young 20-something could encounter.  As the band grew and changed over the years, many members would come and go, lending their talents to Silentium live shows and recordings by means of guitar, voice, cello, violin, drums/percussion, and keyboard.  Through the years, the band pulled through playing many shows around Wisconsin and in 2004, self-released the four song EP, "In Vino Veritas."  Silentium Amoris nearly died out for almost two years following creative differences and other artistic pursuits.

Singer/songwriter, Kroes, who also plays bass in the hardcore punk rock band, Avoided, had spent much of his creative energy and time on the road with that band's hectic touring schedule.  As the year 2007 began approaching, and Kroes began getting anxious about the 26th year of his life, he thought he would get Silentium Amoris started again and began writing new material and recording the forthcoming album, "Aspirations and the Lack of Dreams Fulfilled" due out in March of 2007.  He enlisted long-time friend and musical collaborator, Chris Johnson, along with Kroes' partner, Tamara Schiefer to complete the new line-up.  Additional musicians from Milwaukee bands, Wooden Robot, The Cocksmokers, and Perry have also been brought in to help.  No longer bearing the angst of a young 20-something and feeling content in life, Kroes turned the lyrical content of the band to reflect his radical, yet peaceful political beliefs.  The music remains downcast, soft and eerily personal, but the topics of the songs are everything from dissatisfaction with the U.S. government, anger about U.S. military operations, age, and disdain over an oppressive capitalist regime.

While categorized as an experimental folk group, Silentium Amoris borrows influences from ambient, punk, hip-hop, crust, and metal.  And as always, this band remains 100% DIY in respect to music and ethics.  This is a band that just tries to make it day to day, while living the life of the under-employed and making music in the sparse, spare moments of the non-business hours.

Hi, I am amber from the Vineyard & I was casually browsing through some music and came across this...I just want to say that I am deeply moved by the 2nd song. I cannot see the full title, but it is "Retribution..." I also like the other songs I hear as well, there are a lot of little simple details in the music and the lyrics are meaningful. The female voice is beautiful! Really like what y'all are doing here. Keep it up!

G'day Bryan Kroes, Smiffy here. Got directed to your music from Colchester in England. Not bad, seeing as I live in New Zealand. I've been sitting here jamming along with you on the uke, because it was closest. If you get a chance try downloading the Ukulel Orchestra of Great Britain. The do a song called "Miss Dynamite" The voices on your songs would suit it. I'm enjoying what I've heard so far. Cheers I'll listen to more of your songs over the next few days.
