New Music
Marty Smith, posted 17 Mar 2008 10:33 AM comments 0
So here's the latest and greatest music from Cranachan... okay it's only our first piece ever completed. We've got more on the way though, including some original tunes and a Robert Burns song that's a great sing along, called Rantin'Rovin' Robin. Anyway, check out Bedlam Boys and Abraham Cove. The latter is a slip jig I wrote, and the title "Abraham Cove", was another name for Bedlam Boys, only more specifically to the guys faking insanity in order to beg out on the streets. Give it a listen and see what you think, and give us some of your feedback if you would. Thanks.

Evanston's FIRST EVER Irish session!!!

Evanston's FIRST EVER Irish session!!! I've been working with the owners of a new brewery here in town to get this session going. Right now (and for at least 25 years, since I've lived here) there are no other sessions. So I *think* this will be Evanstons first regular Irish session. If you live near here, please come check it out, bring your family and your instruments. They've got great food (and beer!) too. Below is a rough copy of the flyer I printed for advertising it. Hope to see some of you there!

SUDS BROS. Irish Music session

We are proud to announce that starting March 5th, 2008, Suds Bros. Brewery will be hosting Evanston's first Irish music session. Molly's Revenge, a well known Celtic band, will be here to give us a big kickoff at 7:00 pm, Wednesday evening! After this, the session will be held on the FIRST TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH!!! So mark your calendars and be sure to be there.

An Irish session is like a jam session, only we'll be playing traditional Irish music (with some Scottish tunes thrown in) and it is open to anyone and everyone with a desire to play the music. It's a group experience, and we'll have some leaders there to guide us, so get out your fiddles, flutes, whistles, guitars, mandolins and any other instrument you may have sitting around in your closet. Again, this is open to EVERYONE. The session will be held in the restaurant of Suds Bros., so anyone of any age can be a part of it, all you need is your instrument! Starts at 7pm, and may run until 9pm or later.

If you're interested, but would like more information, please contact me here on EZFolk.

The tunes listed here are just suggestions, so that everyone who shows up can have a basic repertoire. If you know some Irish or Scottish tunes that are not listed here, and you would like to play them, then by all means, let's play them! This list is just to get us started, and will surely grow as the session does. And don't worry if you don't know all these tunes either, start with what you can, and you'll pick up the rest along the way! That's part of the fun of an Irish session, so come sit in, relax, and most of all, enjoy it!
The Unveiling

The Unveiling Cranachan...

... is a tasty Scottish dessert. And as of two days ago, it is also the name of a band. Carolee Bowen (another former BRB member) and I have been performing as a little duo show, and SOOOO, from now until the end of time, we shall be known as Cranachan (ta-dah *cheers and applause* -thank you, thank you, please, that's quite enough, yes, thank you). Anyhoo, we've got a recording under way, with the first track almost finished up, and I'll be posting that soon. It's a great song called Bedlam Boys, which was inspired by the mighty Old Blind Dogs versions of the song on their album Four on the Floor (they've got 3 recorded versions and, of course we've given ours a pretty major overhaul). If you've never heard the Dogs, go now and listen to their music. They're the best of the best. Well, maybe second best now, as soon as I post some of OUR new music. Okay, let's see, where was I going here... yes, yes, the recording. We've got a GREAT fiddler named Nate Olsen scheduled to put some fiddle tracks on, and Carolee's son, Ethan will be (hopefully) laying down one of his masterful, inspired, super-duper bass parts (if you want to hear Ethan's bass playing, listen to the NEW Carson's and Sonny's set on my music). It's gonna be great, and we've got some other music started as well.

So, here's a link to a recipe for Cranachan. Go look at it, maybe even make it if you want (you don't even have to taste it to know that it's delicious though) and then come back and tell me how great and awesome Cranachan is for a band name. Go now, my jungle friends.

I added another set of tunes from the new album, called Sunset on the Bear River. Three great tunes by Carolee Bowen, ouy flute and mandolin player (among other instruments). Please have a listen and give some feedback if you would. Thanks.
