Biography

I started out as a folksinger in the 60s, playing clubs mostly in LA and New York. In 1972, I became a founding member of the LA based comedy improvisation group, The Groundlings -- performing, teaching and directing. I followed kind of a natural progression by drifting into TV writing, and for 15 years worked on the writing staffs at Cheers, The Nanny, Ellen, The Drew Carey Show, and a few others. In 2001, I co-created According to Jim for ABC/TV. Three years ago, I left the show to get back to songwriting full-time. Now I'm having a ball doing whatever I want. I just finished my first CD. It's called Tracy Newman and the Reinforcements "A Place in the Sun." It can be purchased at www.cdbaby.com/cd/tracynewman. It feels great to have a CD out there. I'm really proud of it. I hope you'll check it out. My daughter, Charlotte Dean did the painting on the cover. Kvell. (The Reinforcements are Gene Lippmann and Lorie Doswell.)

Love that "Waffle Boy" song! The first song that I ever "finished" the lyrics on was called "Waffle House Waitress" with a first line of "Slim and smokin, one tooth broken".... I've never recorded mine because I've never been able to sort out the melody and chords so that I'm satisfied with them. I'm hoping your song will motivate me to "finalize" my Waffle House song - if so, I'll mention your name when I accept my Grammy!...

What a pleasure to be in Harriet Schock's songwriting class with Tracy! She is so generous and her warmth captivates as she shares her great song ideas with us. Recently I was in her audience at an LA WoMen In Music Showcase and I hung on her every note and lyric. I laughed and cried as she sang "Waffle Boy." Tracy has made me pay more attention to the little things going on all the time that weave texture, color and depth into the tapestry of life and could end up in a great song!

Tracy is pure gold. You can not listen to her without smiling. Her fan base is from seven to eighty-five (that I know about). She is a great storyteller and I love her voice. Tracy is alot of fun to watch live. She is having a great time and she takes us all with her. She has my vote in any thing she wants to do.

Tracy Newman may be famous in another area (TV writing and production for which she's an Emmy winner), but she is truly a songwriter as well. Having written songs before her fame in TV and comedy (she's also one of the founders of the Groundlings), she has returned to songwriting and performing full time. I'm thrilled to have watched this process once a week for a couple of years now and I can honestly say she is one of my favorite songwriter/performers. Her musical choices and lyric writing ability are astounding. Her songs will be running through your head if you hear them once or more, and you'll welcome them. See her live whenever you can. Come say "hi" because I'll be there.
