Song Information:
This is a song I was introduced to via Bruce Springsteen's recent "Seeger Sessions" album. The original is a fairly well known traditional spiritual called "Mary, Don't You Weep". While I was immediately attracted to the imagery from the Hebrew Bible, as a practicing Jew I just didn't feel right singing a song to "Mary," so I did a slight rewrite to produce this Jewish version of the spiritual. My original version of this song was done in Dm (following Springsteen's arrangement), but I have since started following Pete Seeger's more traditional version and thus the current arrangement is in DMaj

This is my first recording featuring my newly acquired BH&S Banjulele

Lyrics:
Rachel, Don't You Weep
(Based on “Mary, Don't You Weep”)
Traditional, Arranged by John W. Leys

“A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more. Thus says the Lord: Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears... there is hope for your future... your children shall come back to their own country.” - Jeremiah 31.15-17

Well if I could I surely would
Stand on the rock where Moses stood
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

Chorus:
O Rachel, don't you weep, don't you mourn
O Rachel, don't you weep, don't you mourn
Pharaoh's army get drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

Well Rachel wore twelve links of chain
On each link was one son's name
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

Chorus:

Well one of these nights bout 12 o'clock
this old world is gonna rock
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

God gave Noah the rainbow sign
Said, "No more water, but fire next time"
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

Chorus:

The Lord told Moses what to do
To lead those Hebrew children through
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

Well Moses stood on the Red Sea shore
And smote the water with a two by four
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

Chorus:

Brothers and sisters don't you cry
they'll be good times by and by
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

Rachel wore twelve links of chain
And on every link was freedom's name
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

Chorus:

Rachel wore twelve links of chain
And on every link was the good Lord's name
Pharaoh's army got drownded
O Rachel don't you weep

Chorus: (repeat until end)
