Biography
My name is TJ. I am a scientist living in the State of New Jersey in the United States of America. I am also an above average (self proclaimed) Erhu amateur player. I am happily married with two kids. At least two of my family members are tune deaf and don't pay too much attention to my music, but they do give me encouragement from time to time.
I grew up in the City of Tianjin, China during the heat of the Culture Revolution (1966 to 1976). When I was 9 years old, in fear of me inevitably becoming a peasant (the fate of most city youths in those days), my mom forced me into learning the traditional Chinese musical instrument Erhu. I liked the music but hated the practice. Despite being a pupil of a couple of first rate Erhu teacher/musicians (Zhao YanChen, and later on Nie JingYu), I did not become a professional musician, much to the disappointment of my parents, but I think I definitely made the right choice! When I was 14 in 1978, it was possible to enter the universities in China again and so my parents finally permitted me giving up the Erhu learning and eventually I became a scientist instead. In 2005 at the age of 41, I suddenly became an Erhu lover again! I therefore resumed playing. I still hate practice but now enjoy learning new pieces. Only now that I realised what I have missed by not being a good pupil of the two Erhu's great eachers, but it is too late! Dispite that, I am very gracious for the opportunities I got when I was a dont-know-better little boy and it has certainly given me a lot of enjoyment nowadays.
