Biography
Oh No! Not Another Elvis Impersonator!
In the 50's while Elvis was becoming nationally known, Bobby Moore, with his widowed mother, was digging dirt on a redland farm near Tyler, Texas where he grew up. Although members of his family sang and played musical instruments, Moore's interests lay elsewhere. And although the thought of singing professionally never entered the boy's mind, he, like his mother, sang constantly. He sang while he worked. He sang in school variety shows. He sang in the congregation of the big tent revivals that passed through the rural Texas community where he lived. He sang with or without an audience. He sang for the joy of singing.
Fed up with poverty, Moore founded his own business when he was 14, graduated high school and college with honors, and taught school. He founded and published newspapers. "But the only time I ever made any money was in the oil business," he said. His marriage to an attractive former model ended in divorce. His 86-year old mother died in a house fire in 1985.
Then one Christmas, a chance event took place which changed the direction of his life. Moore was doing a sidewalk DJ show which featured early rock and roll tunes at the East Texas State Fairgrounds. "More for fun than anything else," he says. He boasted that he could play any hit that Elvis ever had. But when a member of the audience requested "Santa Claus Is Back in Town", Bobby couldn't find the tape.
To appease the woman who requested the song, he offered to sing it. This brought an immediate response from the audience. Moore was on the spot. He sang the song. The audience wanted more. During the months that followed, his repertoire grew to half a dozen early Presley hits, and Bobby found himself in demand to sing at retirement homes and special events. (Today he sings over 150.)
Suddenly, music had become a major part of his life. And being a perfectionist by nature, Bobby pumped more and still more energy into his musical productions. He had learned a few guitar chords as a child and had taken piano lessons for a short time, but now it was time to get "serious".
Clyde Vance, who was an early mentor and who had taught Bobby his first guitar chords, now lay dying of incurable cancer. As a final act of generosity, Clyde put into Bobby's hands his most treasured possession... a guitar made by the C.F. Martin Company.
It was a fine instrument. And the up and coming singer now felt the obligation to learn to play it... well.
The guitar is now his constant companion. It has even been rumored that he sleeps with it!
From the beginning, audiences have shown anything but indifference to Moore's style. He has created traffic jams at parking lot shows, has been besieged on stage by amorous women of all ages, has prompted jealous rages between lifelong female friends and, according to some, has come close to "raising the dead".
What is there about this man's style?
Like Elvis Presley, much of the music sung by Bobby Moore today has its roots in "Rhythm and Blues". In fact, it could be said that the whole rock and roll movement of the 50's had its roots in gospel and R&B.
And to sing the blues, Bobby Moore says that you must have experienced them. "To sing the blues, you gotta' have em'!" he said.
"When I sing about an unfaithful lover, I relive my own sad experiences of deception and pain. When I sing about loneliness, I remember my long, lonely nights alone. And when I do a song about lost opportunities and mistakes, I know what I'm talking about... I've been there!"
"But then, I've known the joys of life and love and I constantly replay the happy times in my mind when I'm singing happy tunes. It works both ways," he said.
Moore's performances, in a style reminescent of Elvis have touched audiences all across the state. As one fan said, "You come away from him... somehow changed. He touches you deep inside where you've never been touched before."
The shows get bigger, and the schedules get tighter. Bobby now finds himself strapped for time as he shuttles back and forth from his old homeplace near Tyler to his recording studio in South-Central Texas.
"In the eyes of some, my life is a mystery at best. But all I can say is this... Fish gotta' swim. Birds gotta' fly. And I gotta' sing or bust," reflected this man whom some say is destined to rock the world.
