Biography
NOS or "Not Otherwise Specified" is the result of our love for a wide range of musical styles. At any given time we can be caught playing in a folk, blues, rock and roll, country, or jazzy style with song types ranging from ballads to good old foot stomping music. We play covers of old and new songs from traditional to popular, as well as, original tunes. We are Alan Sirvent on guitar and vocals and Ira Kittrell on mandolin, harmonica and vocals.

We met at the Walker Home for Children in Needham, Massachusetts where we both work. It's a residential treatment facility and school for children with special needs. Feel free to visit online and learn more about Walker. It's a very special place. Ira is the speech-language pathologist and I am the business manager and occasional child behavior specialist.

About Ira Kittrell:

I started playing harmonica just to kill the time as I traveled the U.S. seeing the Grateful Dead. I would play along with whatever tapes were on, as the Dead played everything from country to folk, to rock and roll, jazz and ballads, I learned to play the same. Over the years I would sit in with bands here and there and play my harp on tunes of every genre. Recently, I borrowed a friend’s mandolin, and it felt just right in my hands and in my soul. Since hooking up with Alan, I have been able to explore a variety of genres through both of these instruments (along with my trustee kazoo when the mood strikes). I feel that nothing is finer than jamming away on any tune, any time, any where, playing music for my enjoyment and that of the audience who are kind enough to play along with us in their own way.

About Alan Sirvent:

I got my first guitar when I was about 12 years old. One of my dad's co-workers had a guitar, an amp and a Mel Bay learn to play guitar book for sale. Luckily for me, my dad thought the price was right. I quickly learned enough to join the local folk choir and often found myself whiling away the hours with a guitar in my hand. I have never been comfortable too far away from my guitar. I've been in different bands ranging from eclectic rock to ballad duos and am always tickled when I can sit in with a band. My favorite gig was providing the musical background for a magician/juggler. N.O.S. has allowed me to continue exploring music in new and exciting ways.
