Steveston Encore

Steveston Encore We played for the Steveston Folk Guild at the Steveston Gulf of Georgia Cannery. It was a rainy night, but we managed to fill most of the seats. The sound was excellent, managed by Dave McArthur, the moving force behind the Guild and a fellow guitar picker. I tried out a new performance schtick for the first time and it went over really well. Some of you may want to try this out...

Article In The Richmond News, August 7 2008 Questions and Answers

What are you reading?

I have a stack of books by the bed and read excerpts from 2 or 3 every night. Travelling With Shadows by Eduardo Pinto is my current poetry reading, James Lee Burke, John Sanford, Louis Lamour are all authors I read on a regular basis. And the Bible.

Moment that changed your life?

I was dancing and stepped all over a girls’ foot. She begged off the dance floor, saying she had a headache. I didn’t know you could get a headache from sore feet. None the less, she was up and dancing bravely with some else moments later. So, I decided to play a guitar and be in a band so I would never have to give anyone else a headache, other than those who stood too close to the speaker. I was 13 and have been playing ever since.

What is your biggest personal regret?

Playing for Breast Cancer Research
Steve Alexander, posted 05 Aug 2008 09:26 AM comments 0
Playing for Breast Cancer Research I was back at the docks at Steveston, playing for a surging stream of tourists out to enjoy the long week-end sunshine. The event was organized by the Steveston Folk Guild guru, Dave McArthur and Karen Kelm came out from Vancouver to sing and dance beautifully. Further on down the boardwalk was Eire Born, a talented Irish dance troup.

For this one, I used my Roland AC-60 and Godin Multiac nylon string. I have about 85 minutes of wave files on a USB drive that I use for smooth jazz accompaniment, so I used that and played some solo pieces as well. The sound was great from where I sat. My secret weapon is a little pre-amp I bought from a company outside Nashville (Creation Audio Labs). It makes any acoustic pick up come alive with no artifacts or sound coloration. Here's their link, if you are interested in checking it out: http://www.creationaudiolabs.com/mk423

We had two ladies working the crowd and a little pink pail for voluntary donations and made about $400.00 for the cause. My wife has had exploratory surgery with, thankfully, negative results, so I had a personal reason for wanting to help out.

I have noticed that many of the busking acts use reverb, so I added a little to the guitar which sounds great on its own. What is it about reverb that people like in an outdoors setting?

Review and article from Record Producer in the UK The acoustic guitar is more difficult to record than it looks. Simply pointing a microphone and hoping for the best doesn't always work. But as we can hear from this extract from Big John McNeil performed and recorded by Steve Alexander, if you have a good player, good guitar, good acoustic, good mic and good technique, the results can be outstanding.

Here is how it was done, in Steve Alexander's words...
