Tablatures FAQ

What is tablature?

  • Tablature (or “tab” for short) is a system of writing music for a specific instrument in a simplified way so it can be learned without the necessity of having to learn to read standard musical notation.

How do you read tablature?

You can find tablature reading instruction by clicking on the following links:

What are MIDI files?

  • MIDI files are computer generated files. On ezFolk most tabs have 3 MIDI files: one played at a very slow speed, another played at a moderately slow speed, and one played at normal speed.

What’s the difference between MIDI files and MP3 files?

  • As stated above, MIDI files are computer generated files. However, MP3 files are actual recordings of music by an artist such as you would hear on a CD or in live performance. Many of the tabs on ezFolk have corresponding MP3s in addition to the MIDI files.

What if there’s something I can’t understand in a tablature?

I want to learn a particular song from my favorite group. Can I get the tab here?

  • Probably not. The tablature on ezFolk consists of songs that are in the public domain (published before 1923), so you probably won’t find a song by a modern group unless they happened to record an old song that was public domain. You can, however, learn to play an instrument on ezFolk, and after you learn how to play you will have the techniques that will enable you to play any music you like.
