Any hints as to the type of tape to put on the fretboard to mark the WWH-WWWH? Some of my tabs go up to a 5th interval, have not run across anything higher than that. I'm using blue painter masking tape cut into narrow widths and think I need to re-position my first markings -- they are not dead on. Before I started over I thought I'd ask what you guy/gals used and how far up the neck you placed the cheat markers.

My 2nd uke, a Hilo baritone, had cheapo plastic stick-on "dot markers" that promptly fell off and got lost. I replaced them with adhesive aluminum foil tape (the kind Home Depot sells for duct repair), cut into dots with a notebook paper hole puncher.

Malcolm- A post over on Fiddlefork suggests auto detailing tape (pinstriping tape). I have thought about marking the fingerboard on my fiddle, but have decided so far not to do it. I think what you have to watch out for is that if you have the notes (nonfrets), marked, you must be in exact tune everytime you pick the fiddle up. I may yet decide to on tape, but I have been getting better at hitting close to the right position, and/or sliding into it. You can also check the info on: http://www.fiddlerwoman.com/id51.htm This is a nice site that I was pointed to by Richard several years ago. Jackie's post is about drafting tape. It should be available at any good office supplies store (It comes in different colors and widths - is used by draftsmen for borders, etc.). I don't think tape is very helpful. I put a pencil mark on the neck to help with tuning the strings against each other, but like Brad, I think is easier to slide into a note tnan to use tape. dave

Tape is "ok" in the very beginning. The trick is training your ear to know where the finger postions are. I know scales can be boring but they do help you learn where to place your fingers by ear rather than being dependent on the tape.
