We celebrated my Grandpas 80th birthday this weekend. He is an amazing harmonica player, but because of his health he hasnt been able to play in a long time, so he passes a few of his old harps on to me. Both are Hohners and what I believe to be the origional cases. One is an Echo Harp in the key of G and C, that belonged to his father, and the other is a 64 Chromonica that he got before he got married and they have been married for close to 6o years. So they are both very old but are in pertty good condition, and I want to keep them that way. I dont know what the combs are made of, I think one is wood and the other is plastic or metal but he told me I need to clean them. I want to learn how to clean and perserve them so they stay nice. I also want to learn to play like he did. Are there any good instructional books or web sites I can use to teach me? Do you know how I should store them and how often I can or should play them, and how much would an apprisal cost? mainly I want to learn to play and clean them, I play a lot so my harps get grungy. And I want to keep these in as agood of cindition as they are now.

Go to the Harptalk message group and use the search function to read about cleaning. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/harptalk/ The Chromonica is wood and I thought the Echo was too. Wouldn't be plastic if it's that old. I would set the harps aside until you are sure of what you are doing. Leaving them alone wont hurt them but an improper cleaning might, especially if they have wooden combs. Hohner's service center tells you not to clean them. They also say that old harmonicas normally only have sentimental value. http://www.hohnerusa.com/index.php?1487 dave Last edited on Wed Jun 20th, 2007 06:22 pm by davebough |

I bought an old Hohner Chromatica recently. It seems to have been (still is) a mass produced mid-to-low end chromatic. And old harps, I agree are not worth the investment if time, cleaning, stragne squeaks, uneven vomume production or health worries. Not the case with your harps, but I wondered if my harp came from a tuberculosus ward during the Depression. I cleaned it and found something interesting. Never. Never. Never lubricate the slide with anything that that won't evaporate. WD40 tastes aweful! Trust me on this.
