Hullo folks.

I've been put in charge of figuring out what can be done with a vintage Hohner "Chromonica" harmonica which used to belong to my great uncle. I don't know anything about harmonicas, but since I brought my great-grandfather's mandolin back to life, my cousin who now owns the harmonica asked me to see what I could dig up.

It hasn't been played in a long time, and she would like to see it cleaned up so she can play it. Other than defaulting to taking it in to a professional, I wondered if anyone would have some advice on how I can make it so.

I found some information on the Hohner company, but most of my search for this particular harmonica turned up items for sale rather than useful info.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice.

Thanks!

First see if it blows and draws ok, and if the slide action is acceptable. Maintenance is a constant headache with these things, their windsavers the big buggaboo. You really have to love them. Never use pressurized air to blow the guts out of a harmonica. Unscrew the lid, if you want to look inside - they're not complex, just require some measure of delicacy. Tweezers can remove hairs, and toothpicks can gently bend reeds.
