I purchased my first resonator guitar last night, and after bout a half hour of trying to get it tuned (i finally got it into open G [D-G-D-G-B-D]) i realised i havent the faintest clue as to what im doing with it. So, does anyone have any tips they can give me or any books i can buy to help me out. I'm most interested in learning it for bluegrass, but anything to get me started out would be great. Thanks

Does your resonator guitar have a round neck profile or a square neck profile?  A round neck resonator can be played with picks like a regular guitar, or with a slide (bottle neck or steel tube) around your finger, or the strings can be raised with an extension nut and played Hawaiian-style or Dobro-style with a steel bar.  The square neck resonator can only be played using the steel bar with the strings raised.   The Hawaiian and bluegrass styles of playing are quite different from each other, but there are training videos and DVDs available.  If you are interested in playing bluegrass, you would be playing dobro style. To play in this style, you will need a set of metal thumbpicks and fingerpicks, and a steel bar.

Homespun Video has number of introductory videos:

Folk of the Wood has a number of instruments, accessories, and other resources, including of free on-line lessons:

My condolences to you about the unfortunate accident.  I hope you can find a luthier who can repair the instrument for you at a reasonable price.

What a bummer.  When you get it fixed, you should try GBDGBD tuning.  that's the most common used for bluegrass Dobro.  Check out Homespun Tapes for some of Cindy Cashdollar's instruction DVDs.  I hope your bar is a Stevens type steel, like the one in the middle of Will's pictures.
