I am slowly working my way through Wayne Erbsen"s Clawhammer Banjo book. His version of "Old Blue" seems to be a household hit, unfortunately,  I only have 4 verses to the song. I'm sure there is more to it.  Is anyone out there aware of additional verses?

I know about 10 or more.  What have you got so far?

This is what I started off with.  Its a great little song with a catchy melody... just a little too short for my liking.

I had a dog and his name was blue, (3 times)

Betcha five dollars he's a good dog too.

.....  Chorus...  Here Blue... you good dog you

I shouldered my gun and tooted my horn,

Gonna find a possum in the new ground corn.

Old blue barked and I went to see,

He cornered a possum up in a tree.

.....  Chorus...  Here Blue... you good dog you

When old blue died, he died so hard,

Shook the ground in my back yard.

Lowered him down with a golden chain,

Every link I did call his name.

.....  Chorus...  Here Blue... you good dog you

When I get to heaven first thing I do,  (3 times)

Grab my horn and call for Blue.

Well, its been a couple weeks now and I'm still stuck on this tune.  After digging around a bit, managed to find all kinds of versions. Changing things around and making it your own is kinda fun.

I had a dog and his name was Blue

I had a dog and his name was Blue

I had a dog and his name was Blue

Betcha five dollars he's a good dog too.

Chorus:  Hey Blue, you're a good dog you

Old blue's feet was big and round

And old blue's ears was long and brown

You could hear blue bark from miles around

He never let a possum touch the ground

Chorus:

Well I shouldered my gun and I tooted my horn

Gonna get us a possum in the new ground corn

I heard Blue bark and I ran to see

He cornered a possum up a Simmons tree.

Chorus:

Roasted that possum all nice and brown

Spread fresh taters all around

When she's done, I called for Blue

Come-on Blue, you can have some too

Chorus:

Well, I'm gonna tell ya, just so ya knows

Gonna tell ya, just so ya knows

Old Blue's gone where good dogs go

He'll be up there chasin possums ..... till I grow old

Chorus:

When old blue died, he died so hard

He broke the ground in my back yard

As I lowered him down on a golden chain

At every link, I called his name

Chorus:

When I get to heaven, the first thing I'll do

When I get to heaven, the first thing I'll do

When I get to heaven, the first thing I'll do

Is grab my horn and call for Blue

Chorus:

Now here I'm a sittin and I'm all alone

Wife and kids left me, cause their sick a this tune.

Hi, I love to sing this tune too. I've started playing CH banjo one year ago but I live in Italy where there are no OT jams. So I find more interesting and less boring for my family to sing the verses of the tune I learn.

I'm happy you posted more verses I can add them to the ones I've already learnt using Wayne's book.
