Morning! I'm looking to definitely (!) get a Lanikai LU21, but I'm just debating which size... Either a Soprano or a Concert, I'm looking to play more tunes than chords (sorry, not sure of the technical terms) so would one be more suitable than the other? Also, if I was following sheet music does that matter which size you have, because of one having more frets? And just something silly, when looking for cases I'm having trouble finding many for the concert size, from experience would a concert ukulele still fit in a soprano case??? Thank you!

mooseylusie wrote: Morning! Which size ukulele you buy usually depend upon personal preferences. Some uke players insist upon the soprano, which is considered the standard size. Then again, the larger tenor uke is most popular amongst natives in Hawaii. The concert is the size in between, but closer to the soprano in size than to the tenor. The concert uke usually has a longer neck (14 frets to the body), a bit wider spacing between the frets, and a larger, body. If you have large hands, you might find the concert gives you a little bit more room for your fingers. A concert uke is longer and wider than a sorpano, and needs a concert sized hard case or gig bag (it will not fit a case or bag sized for a soprano). I personally prefer the concert and tenor size over the soprano, but that's my own preference. If you are buying a Lanikai, may I suggest this? For about $20 more than the LU21C, which is a laminated nato top concert uke, you can get the solid spruce top Lanikai S-C (that's the model that I own). A solid top uke will improve its tone over time as you play it more; a laminate will never improve. This dealer is selling the Lanikai S-C for $99, and with a rebate offer, you get a free Lanikai concert uke gig bag: http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-LAI-SC-LIST ![]() Last edited on Fri Sep 4th, 2009 01:27 pm by Will ____________________ Will http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/297/ Loose Change & Friends http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/245/ http://loosechangeandfriends.com The Earth Tones http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/337/ A Bunch Of Coconuts http://abunchofcoconuts.com |

Afternoon all, As someone just learning to play I find the concert a little easier to hold, but it's still relatively small. Were talking about 24" overall. You might not have the opportunity to try various instruments, but take it from Will, the difference in sound between a solid top and a laminate is distinct. I was able to hear and learn about a number of different instruments before taking the plunge. It's definitely worth stretching your budget if possible. Then... just have fun. KC

I never tried a Flea, but Flukes sound wonderful if you're looking for a moore guitarlike sound. Cheap they're not, but not too expensive either.

Good that you went with a Flea, nice uke and you'll like it. Soprano or concert, why this question comes up so often is beyond me, but it does.
