Hi guys, as the topic says, I'm new to ukulele, just got it yesterday. My dad bought me a Hilo 2652 Soprano ukulele. He said it was pretty cheap, and then if I liked it, i could get a more expensive one.

Here's the ukulele:  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TAFQFU/ref=asc_df_B000TAFQFU897622?smid=A3M2O3U6L5DL0B&tag=dealtmp204-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B000TAFQFU

Now, the strings that came with look like clear, plastic strings that have a cheap feel to it. So I had a few questions if you don't mind answering:

1. Will the strings really effect my playing that much, seeing as how I'm new?
1a. If so, what is your recommendation for replacement strings?

2. What's a good starting book/guide that can help me out?

3. Any suggestions on what kind of tuner to get?

Thanks a bunch guys & gals. :)

I have the same uke as a knock around, throw it in the car, take it camping ukulele.  It actually sounds pretty good with some Aquila strings on it.  Seeing that you are just starting out I would suggest that you just play it and don't worry about strings.  Lots of good uke video lessons on Youtube and certainly good stuff in ezfolk.com too.  I think that a video is worth a thousand words and much easier to pick up on quickly.  Any tuner will work and shouldn't have to spend over $15 or so.  Play it and have fun and a few months down the road show your dad what you can do and ask him for a solid wood uke in the $150 - $200 range.... :)  Just my $0.02 of course.

You're welcome.  Come back here and tell us how it is going.  There is a lot of expertise here for sure.... but it is pretty quiet most of the time.... But people here do care about newbies...:)

Ukulele Chord Chart
Ukulele Chord Chart 2

Learn and Practice these chords and then you'll be able to play just about any songs.  I'm doing this at the moment and it's really easy.  The picking and scales are a bit more tricky.  Learn these chords first though.

I'm right there with you! I got a Lanikai Tenor on October 6th, a no-name brand Chinese made Baritone on the 10th, a vintage soprano on the 13th and another vintage soprano on the 14th. I'm strumming away! I've got a long way to go, but have three chords down solid, getting some calluses built up and driving my wife crazy!

A set of Aquila Nylgut strings will really improve an inexpensive Ukulele. You can practice with what you have, but when it comes time to change, definitely try the Aquilas.
