Just received my first uke the other day..... Lanikai LU-21T Tenor.  Looks really decent for an entry level.  One thing that I am not that happy with is the volume.... There isn't any to speak of.  It came with GHS strings and I have ordered some Aquilla Nygut strings, so am hoping that it will kick it up a bit.  It was pointed out to me by some of you that because it is laminated and not a solid top it will be quieter... Man are your right about that!  Any bets as to whether the new strings will help.  If it doesn't, I may be tempted to return it and spend another hundred bucks on top of it.

-thanks

It's very difficult to find a 'tenor' size for less than $300 that would sound great or of good quality.  The only tenor size that I can think of that would give you the loudness and consistency would be a Tenor Fluke.    My wife has a island fluke with rosewood frets for $280.00 last year.  The rest of the soundbox is not wood, but polymer. I don't see the model at http://www.fleamarketmusic.com.

Koa Fluke (FMM-F-108)

This special Fluke model comes standard with a solid Koa wood top, rosewood fingerboard, bubinga bridge with adjustable saddle, solid walnut neck, Grover 4B (sta-tite)TM tuners and Aquila Nylgut strings. Offered in both tenor and concert sizes. Includes custom gig bag.

Our Price: $365.00

As for the Aquila nylguts - yes, it will improve the sound (sweeter) and loudness of the uke.  But, the soundbox of the uke, especially the top and bracing stills plays a major part of the sound.

I have a timid Richwood soprano that sounds a lot sweeter since I sting it with Nylguts, but only vaguely louder. So if I were in your shoes I'd know what to do. I mean if you feel tempted to return it NOW already...

Yep, some more money, a hell lot more pleasure. And you'll be saved all these following months of remorse that will lead to a next purchase anyway.

But maybe you first could find out for yourself how important is:
  1. loudness - since you planned to be playing just for your own entertainment (will that remain so?) you didn't think it so important when you started your search;
  2. tenor seize - which is more expensive while you can have a good and loud concert-seize Fluke for a price that may suit you better - and when you started out, you were not yet stuck on a tenor;
  3. money-matters - how much can you spend now and how much after what period of time, what will all in all cost you more / be more satisfying?
I can identity with your state of mind since I recently went through all these pro's & cons myself. You gotta find out what's your priority and where you wanna compromize. Good luck!!!

If your just starting out, I wouldnt worry to much about how loud it plays unless your planning on playing for an audience some time soon. Use what you have to learn how to play and maybe upgrade later. Im new to the uke as well and I plan to keep playing. To learn on I bought a decent sounding inexpensive Excel Soprano for about $60. Well worth the money for a beginner. Like someone mentioned above, if your really concerned about volume, send it back and opt for the more expensive model. Best of luck to you!

Just one more cent, to add something to Honu's post: Elderly lists the Fluke Tenor for $181.

Yep... Way to quiet.... Can't stand it.  Will save up and get a solid body and top.  Thanks to everyone for your help and support.
