Anyone out there know where some shops in Chicago (in the city) carry ukes?  I'm heading there this Friday for several days and would love to see what's up there.  I'll be on the SW side on the city, but can travel up the the north side (city proper) to check out something good.  I seem to remember a vintage shop up that way, but don't remember where or the name.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Chris

Chris:

Welcome to the Windy City.   On the north side of Chicago, you must visit the Different Strummer, the music store run by the Old Town School of Folk Music.  It's widely considered THE store for acoustic instruments, and they have a huge selection of ukuleles in all price ranges from starter to professional instruments.  They also have trained technicians that set up all of the instruments that they sell, because they also supply rental instruments to students who take classes (including ukulele) at the Old Town School.  Best of all, their prices are competitive and very reasonable.  You could spend hours and hours in the store checking out all the ukes, guitars, dobros, banjos, mandolins, fiddles autoharps, strumsticks, etc.

Thanks for that, Will!  I grew up on the SW side, so the North side has always been like new territory every time I come up there to visit.

Hope I can check it out!

Chris

Hi, Chris:

The Old Town School and their music store is located in the old Hild Regional Library building, a few blocks south of the Lincoln Avenue stop on the Ravenswood "L" train (now known as the Brown Line).   Have a pleasant trip.

Chris - if you get this before you get here, there's another place to check out (even though I highly recommend the Different Strummer as well). If you're already on the L, you could consider taking it a bit further and going on to Evanston. There's a music store there called Hogeye Music at 1920 Central St. (847) 473-1260. I bought my fiddle from them and the owner, Jim Craig, is a whiz with instruments (as well as being one he** of a musician) - restored my fiddle from a broken piece of wood to a really decent sounding instrument. I'd call first to find out if they carry Ukes, but I bet they do.

Also, though I've never been there, there's a place called World Folk Music Company - it's on the south side at 1808 W. 103rd St. (773) 779-7059. They don't sell instruments as far as I know, but they may be able to recommend places that are a bit closer to the south side. Just a thought.

Enjoy your homecoming. Hope the weather holds for you - not too hot, not too rainy (it's been both the last few days).
Cheers,

Yes, Hogeye Music is another excellent store for stringed instruments, and YES, they do carry both new and vintage ukes.  It's just north of Chicago in Evanston, closer to my house than Different Strummer.  Jim Craig ordered my 21-chord McSpadden EvoHarp for me 2 years ago, and I bought it from his store for $100 less than what's it's currently selling for (about $920).  Jim also set up most of my guitars.  They also have a great selection of recordings of folk, old timey, and bluegrass music.
