Here is my "new" old baritone uke I got from Goodwill. It is my best sounding uke, and I am in love with it. I did a full blown write up on it HERE if you want to read more details. UkeForever and myself think it might be a Harmony, but there's no way to know for sure, as there are no markings anywhere on it. I Would certianly welcome any clues from anyone as to it's model/manufacturer/age. This uke feels, plays and sounds so good...it just might be the cure for UAS:cool:

Not a clue as to the baritone's maker, but again, congratulations on finding such a winner.

Hey, Frets got a new uke! Or is that a guitar?

Dean, why can't we have Goodwill shops like your Wichita ones in NZ? :( The number of instruments you pick up is mind-boggling.

However, my husband found just the concertina he was looking for in an antique shop at a ridiculous price, so I suppose we can't complain. ;)

Can you point us to a Photoshop tutorial to tell us how to make a pic like the one of Frets holding the guitar?

Cheers, Kath

Oh...if you only knew:)...over the last year I've probably bid on several hundred, gotten maybe 30-40 and fixed up, sold, traded them. The ones on my web site are the ones I've really like and held onto! Every state more or less has a Goodwill "e-store" so I'm getting them from all over the country. It's really nice when I get one from the Wichita store, because then I can just drive over and pick it up! I usually don't go very high on my bids, because I know that for every instrument that goes high...another will be along any time...they never stop comming! In fact, this old uke is the most I've ever spent on a Goodwill instrument! Worth every cent too!!! As it's turning out, it looks like it might actually be an old Godfrey Vega uke!

Believe it or not, I gave Frets the guitar in good old MS paint shop! I just did a file/paste from to get both images into paint shop. I cleaned up the edges of the guitar, cut fret's paw off, put it on top of the guitar, then slid the guitar with his paw back onto his picture. I then used a program called Photowise to shrink the picture to avitar size!:)

1four5...

I'm not sure what your mystery baritone uke is, but I've got one just like it! I bought it sometime last year on eBay. There are no markings on it at all as far as who made it but I'm pretty sure it's identical to yours. It's really a nice uke and I felt like I got a great deal but I forget now how much I paid for it... I think about $80. I liked it so much that I started keeping an eye out for another one like it on eBay and sure enough another one showed up. I didn't get it though. I ordered a custom made Kanilea bari back a few months ago and I'm still waiting to get it so I declared a moratorium on buying new ukes until I get that one (supposedly any day now).

I really don't think it's an Arthur Godfrey Vega... I've got one of those too. Mine is the Vega "Arthur Godfrey De Luxe Solo-Lute" which is a bit fancier model than the basic version was (fancy inlays, etc.) but from pictures I've seen the basic model wasn't like the no-name baritone.

1-4-5,

Looks very similar to a "STADIUM" that I bought last year at a flea market.  The only markings on the "STADIUM" is a decal on the head between the tuners.  Mine is all mahogany with a "dovetail" neck attachment.  I took my neck apart and re-glued. (I've never been fond of deck screws for instruments).  The head shape and saddle are identical.

Thats what I thought too. This Stadium goes for BIN price of $259 on Ebay (#3776928252). However, I doubt Stadium is a brand unto itself. That heel looks like Harmony. I still think the similarities between this uke and the plain Vega is uncanny.

1-4-5,

I think REGAL made the STADIUM brand, but I'm not sure.

Dean...

Just for the record, my wife made me put all the ukes I wasn't playing in boxes and store them in the garage and that was one of them, so I was going from memory. Anyhoo, I went down to the garage and dug it out and lo and behold it's not exactly like yours after all. The rosette pattern is a little different and the bridge is not identical either.

:huh2:

Thanks for looking Richard!

Looking at the close ups of the ebay auction  mentioned by UF, I'm just about convinced that I've got a Stadium, or at least a uke made by the same company who made the Stadium...which, from all the pics I've looked at, could very well be where the Vegas were made, which may have a Harmony connection....back to the auction: Same tuners, headstock, yellowed out celluloid nut and overthick saddle, exact dark stained rosewood fretboard, even the bevel at the end of the fretboard. There is two subtle differences however, one being the soundhole ring color, and the other being the distance from the end of the fretboard to the soundhole. The measurements the guy gives in the ebay auction are very close, and may be exact considering tape measure tolerences:) .  Mind if I ask Mike, what color your sound hole ring is, and if it's an inlay? Mine appears to be a lighter color wood inlay. Thanks again for all the great info!

P.S.

I like this old uke so much, and have been playing it so much the last few days, that when I played my Hilo this morning at work, I knew it would be the last time I would ever ever touch the Hilo again. So I gave it away:)  (not to worry, I have my blue uke for work jams:cool:
