I am sure this has come up before on the forum, and I apologize, as I have not been on here long.  I just received a 6-string tenor, and I am AMAZED at the difference in sound between it and a 4 string.  The paired strings change the whole timbre of the instrument.  Sounds fantastic, I mean.  And yet, some songs I play on the 4 string just don't sound right on 6.  What are your experiences learning this wonderful instrument?  And thanks, ebay dealer, you know who you are!

I don't have the 6-string tenor, but I have an 8-string tenor, which is tuned differently than yours.  My 8-string tenor is tuned gGcCEEAA, with 2 octave pairs and 2 doubled pairs of strings, reminiscent of 12-string guitar tuning.  It is much louder than a 4-string uke, and because of the 8 strings playing up to 6 different notes, it has a richer, fuller sound.  At the same time, it is very different sounding than a 4-string uke when playing the same songs, and may not sound right for certain songs.

Your 6-string tenor has the C-strings octave tuned; what about the A strings - are they doubled or also octave tuned?  If your A-strings are octave tuned, that is the major difference between your 6-string and my 8-string.  That also makes it very different sounding from other ukuleles.

The A strings are also octave tuned.  I am finding I am having trouble getting the high A to sound.  I just got this tenor, and have not got the hang of it yet, but it IS easier than playing a Rickenbacker 12-Stringer!

Hey Will, I believe we both have the same Lanikai O-8E tenor uke. We have discussed the tuning for it in a previous thread.

In the above thread you stated that your tuning is "gG cC EE AA".

The tuning I use is "Gg Cc EE AA". My understanding is that the "fatter" g (7th string) & c (5th string) strings are tuned an octave lower. I got this info from a Kala tuning chart I recieved when I bought my Kala.

The chart reads like this:

Tenor 8 string ukulele

8th string - G

7th string - G low octave

6th string - C

5th string - C low octave

4th string - E unison

3rd string - E

2nd string - A unison

1st string - A

I'm confused - are we on the same page or is one of us useing the wrong tuning?

Hi, Jerry:

We both have our Lanikai 8-string tenors tuned exactly the same way, we just expressed the tuning in a different way.  In each of the 4 courses of strings, one string in each course is tuned "normally" - the other strings (facing the bass side) consists of 2 higher octave strings and 2 doubled strings.   That 6th string is a high octave C string (the highest pitched on the instrument), and it's the 5th string that is the normal C.  The convention that I learned is that the higher than "normal" pitched strings are assigned lower case letters, so, going from bass to treble, the 8 string uke is tuned as follows:

gG - cC - EE - AA

8th string - g (high-octave string)

7th string - G (low-G)

6th string - c (high-octave string)

5th string - C (normal)

4th string - E (doubled)

3rd string - E (normal)

2nd string - A (doubled)

1st string - A (normal)

On a 12-string guitar, the tuning would be described as follows:

eE - aA - dD - gG - EE - AA

Thanks Will, now I can sleep at night and as usual I do appreciate your patience and your indepth answers. I hope you are enjoying your Lanikai as much as I'm enjoying mine!

My apologies, 2manytaylors, for hijacking your thread. I'll see that it doesn't happen again.

2manyTaylors - is your 6-string tenor a KoAloha?  I tried one on my trip to Oahu this past week and I really liked its sound.  I had a Lanikai 6-string and couldn't really get into its sound after trying 2 different tunings (stock strings and Ko'olau Gold strings) so I sold it.  That KoAloha 6-string I tried sounded really nice and I just might want one down the road.

Get rid of the octave A and pair them the same.  A suggestion.  I'm not a big fan of the sound of the A on a sixer.  Your mileage may vary...
