I'd like to know what Hawaiian song is your very favorite that there are tabs or chords for on the Net someplace.  Anybody know any really pretty Hawaiian tunes?

I play guitar and sing with a Hawaiian band (Na Mele Aloha), and we have recordings on-line and a song book that has the chords and lyrics (but NOT tab) for most of them.   Click on the Na Mele Aloha link below.  The MP3's are listed under the July 26 concert, and the song book with chords is listed near the bottom of the web site.  These are the songs that we have available:

Pearly Shells/Tiny Bubbles * Red Sails In The Sunset * Hapa Haole Hula Girl * Island Style * Lovely Hula Hands * The Hula Hula Boys * Little Grass Shack/Little Brown Gal * I Wonder Where * Sweet Singing Bamboo * Hanalei Moon * One More Aloha * Maui Boy/Maui Girl * Waipi'o * Blue Hawaiian Moonlight * Ukulele Lady * Blue Hawaii * One Paddle, Two Paddle * Sweet Leilani Let's Talk Dirty In Hawaiian * Sophisticated Hula * Choto Matei Kudesai * Because Of You (Dahil Sa Yo) * Laihaina Luna * Pua Mana * Amazing Grace * To You Sweetheart Aloha/Aloha Oe

I think my favorite Hawaiian (Hawaiian being Hawaiian not hapa-haole) song would have to be Sweet Lei Mokihana by Hui 'Ohana. I do not know of any tabs, but maybe I'll get one up on Live 'Ukulele sometime.

Iz plays some nice Hawaiian songs.  These are some of the first ones I learned:

Pili Me Ka'u Manu

Thanks, guys, for all your suggestions.  They're a big help.  I just can't imagine playing the Uke and not knowing how to play just a few beautiful Hawaiian songs.  And they are beautiful, and unique too, with a style all their own.  Keep your favorites coming, I'm enjoying this! :)

This is fun - I haven't posted in a really long time, but I'll chime in for this!

My favorite Hawaiian songs are
the all time classic, Aloha ‘Oe (usually I sing it together with Hawai‘i Aloha)

Then, Waimalo (or Nanakuli) Blues, Puamana, Mi Nei, Pua Hone, Haimana Hila, Püpü O ‘Ewa,  Makee ‘Ailana , Noho Paipai, Püpü Hinuhinu, Hanalei Moon, Hele on to Kauai,

and any song that has "humuhumunukunukuapu'a'a in it !
(like "My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua, Hawai‘i

Mostly I learn chords from 'the Big Blue Book' - He Mele Aloha - it doesn't have melodies or tabs, but I believe theres an associated  .org website that has MP3s. Mostly I learn melodies from records or friends.

Tropicalstormhawaii.com has a pretty comprehensive song list with chords, I'm not sure about tabs.

Hawaiian songs lend themselves so well to just strumming and singing, I've been very lazy about learning to pick the melodies!

"humuhumunukunukuapu'a'a!!!   That's too funny!

Now here below is what I think is 'real' Hawaiian music!!!!

Bruddah Iz - Henehene Kou ' Aka

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPUx53G0uGg&feature=related

But personally....I think they look like they're just having a little too much fun.  haha

It's actually humuhumunukunukuapua'a...single 'okina before the final a. It's the state fish of Hawai'i. The name means something like "fish with a snout like a pig." :)

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a is the Hawaiian name for the triggerfish:

That's Chica Cabalona and me singing Na Mele Aloha's version of

Little Grass Shack/Little Brown Gal

Will, ya'll did a great job on that song!  Thanks for posting it.  And the picture.  I'd love to know what God was thinking when he made that fish. :)

Thanks for the compliments.  I just saw a marine aquarium in a restaurant the other day, and amongst the tropical reef fishes in the tank was none other than the humuhumunukunukuapua'a.  That specimen was quite small; much smaller than the photograph posted.
