Of the brands of ukulele strings, which are your favorite?

Do most brands use the same gauge for the first and fourth? So far I've only found one (Martin) that has a different gauge for the fourth.

My favorite uke strings are Aquila Nylgut, which is a proprietary synthetic polymer that is denser than nylon, and designed to mimic that sweet acoustic tone of old-fashioned gut strings, but with much longer string life.  All of my ukes have Nylgut strings.

Aquila does not sell strings directly to consumers; they must be ordered from retailers.  Elderly Instruments and Juststrings.com sell a good selection:

I agree with Will, Clayton.  My Kala concert came with Aquila Nylgut strings and they are far superior to the black ? brand strings I had been playing on.

My preference is a good fluorocarbon string. Worth CD or Fremont for soprano/concert. My reason is that I find the fluorocarbon to be stable, and they tend to impart the sound of the instrument, whereas Aquila tend to make the instruments sound alike. Loud, but lacking in character, and really thick, so it's more difficult to do the things I like to do on the uke. All good strings though, just a personal thang.

Aquilla seem to be the most popular but all I can get is d'darrio.

Low G Aquila I bought on EBay but if you're ever in Carlsbad, CA go to Giacoletti Music. I never used any other brand since I started playing. My low G steel wound does wear out rather quickly but it's the sound that really counts.

I too like Aquila low G strings. I get them at Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach.

It depends on your ukulele.  I also like Aquila strings very much.  I use them on quite a few ukes.  I put a set on my Flea and it sounded awful.  The Flea much prefers Hilo Blacks or even better, Ko'olau Golds.  The Hilo Blacks look nice on the Flea as well.

I have noticed that Kala Reds are popular in Hawaii.  I like the sound!  But they look awful on most ukes, in my opinion.

The size of your uke will have an impact on the guage of each string.  It seems to me that the Martin sets do differ a lot from 1st to 4th, as you say.  Most others don't differ much at all.

I am an Aquila everything person but recently decided to try others. I bought some Worth Brown Medium and put them on a Flea Concert and they are fantastic. Straight away I liked them and to me they are better than Aquila.

I have also bought some Martin (fluorocarbon) strings as a try out for an old Soprano I have and they sound pretty good as well.

I have also ordered some D’addario and Fremont to help get a broader picture of things because as I said I was an Aquila everything person, but now realise there seems to be better out there.

My advice is to try anything at least once and give them a few days of play. I doubt now I will ever go back to Aquila but understand those that live by them.

I just tried the Fremont crystal because they are a little heavier weight. The Martins seemed too slack on my concert uke, and they lacked projection. So I ordered a set of Fremont.

They seem to be just the right gauge, the right amount of resistance, for my particular concert uke. I mostly expect to use that uke for strumming and the heavier strings seem to do better there.

I noticed Fremont make a black set now, but I didn't try them because they are the same gauge as the Martins. They have a heavier weight choice but only the first and fourth strings are different, the other two are the same as on the lighter gauge.

So far I am liking flourocarbon strings. One more to try is a new brand, Bushman now makes strings. I don't think they are flourocarbon. I plan to try a set. One thing that's nice is they offer sets in every conceivable combination, soprano standard, soprano with low G, concert, concert low G, tenor, etc.

The Aquila wound low G strings don't last very long.  I bought two D'Addario pro arte classical guitar D strings for $3.63  and that will string four ukes.  I like the way they sound but only have one uke strung that way.  Low G limits what you can play so its not for everyone.
