Folks,

The D string on my Baritone uke broke, but the other strings are ok, new set (I think it got knocked over). Will a D guitar string serve as a substitute? I'd prefer not to buy a whole new set.

No it want work because the guitar strings are steel and you can do damage to the ukulele, I know that the string on the uke looks like steel, but it is not.

A set of uke strings don't cost that much,  So bite the bullet and purchase a set and your uke will be much happier.

Charlie

Take it into a guitar shop and see if you find a single of the same gauge and material. As long as you buy a "Classical Guitar" string, it should be wound over nylon rather than a steel core as found in electrics and steel string guitars.

You can't just go by it being a "D" string. Guitar scales are longer, so what works for a "D" on guitar won't be the same on a Uke. If anything, I'd look at a classical guitar "A" string. It should be closer. Check the string charts to be sure though.

A nylon D string from a classical guitar string set might work, but may not be at the optimum tension because of the drastic difference in scale length (25.4" for guitar, and about 20" for the baritone uke).  Steel strings cannot be used safely on a uke to to the much higher tension.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I think I'll just get a couple sets of strings and swap them as needed; it's not exactly a king's ransom.
