Lonewolf-

To assist in your search, it would help to know what style of banjo you want to play. Are you looking to play (shiver) bluegrass, or (big fanfare!) clawhammer/old-time style? Or, are you interested in Irish, tenor, classical or jazz? These are all fairly diverse methods and require separate ways of looking at the instrument.

For starters, if you are interested in old-time/clawhammer style, take a look at the 3-book "The How and Tao of Old-Time Banjo" by Patrick Costello in the clawhammer tutorial section of this site. From there, I can recommend several other method/book/video resources.

Of course, if you are determined to follow the dark side, you are beyond my help ;)

I've heard that Wayne Erbsen's book, "Bluegrass Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus" is really good (if you're talking about bluegrass). Here's where you can find it...

Hey Brad,

I didn't mean to step on your toes or anything. We were answering that at about the same time and I didn't see that you responded until after I did.

I'm like you in that I prefer clawhammer over bluegrass, but it seems like most people who ask are wanting to play like Earl, ya know, unless they say differently.

YEAAAAAAAA!:wave3::handsout::thumbs1:

All good books, I have heard. I have only used the second on the list, but found it a good tool. Especially if you are interested in the more notey "melodic clawhammer" Perlman is noted for.
