Lots of folk on both sides. If you rest your arm heavily on the rim, the armrest is probably the way to go, those brackets can get pokey after awhile. The rest also allows you to keep your arm off of the drum, thus letting the sound 'ring' a little more.
I prefer the 'thumpier' sound of clawhammer and think my arm helps promote that, so I don't have an armrest. The brackets don't bother me that I notice, so I never seriously considered an armrest.
If you need to make the decision, get the one with the armrest - you can always remove it.
