I'm new to the forum and music. I am 40 years old and have always wanted to learn to play the banjo. I have no music experience. I have been reading these forums for several days and I think I want to learn the Clawhammer method. Can someone post some links to some online banjo stores where I could get my first banjo. Also any recommendations on what banjo to get. $200-$500 range. Thanks from Missouri

Hi milby, Of course there are a lot of good online sources for banjos, but my favorite is here... http://ezfolk.com/inst/other-stringed-instruments/banjos/banjos.php Those links actually help support the ezFolk website. You can page through and see what different banjos are available, but my top pick in your price range would be the Gold Tone CB-100 (I think it's listed on the 3rd or 4th page). The Gold Tones are great banjos. Another entry level banjo that a lot of people like is the Deering Goodtime, which you can find in there as well. Good luck with the banjo playing!

Hi, I would go with a Gold Tone if I were you. They are really good for what they cost. Janet Davis music has great prices on banjos and is just over the Missouri line in Bella Vista, Arkansas. I think the website is http://www.banjostore.com Angies banjo in Texas has great prices too. I think it is http://www.angiesbanjo.com

Gold Tone would have been my first recommendation for a reliable beginners banjo at that sort of price point. There is a whole raft of generic Chinese suppliers ( Tanglewood, Countryman, Vintage etc etc etc ) providing 'starter' instruments which are focussed on providing a 'shiny banjo' at rock-bottom prices and as is often the case, if you look a little bit above that, you get a lot more value.
