I've been wanting to learn how to play the banjo since I was seven or eight (I am currently 15), but my dad wouldn't even consider me playing anything other than the guitar, piano, fiddle, or mandolin. Finally, now that I can afford one with my own money, I have decided to purchase a banjo on my own. I have looked in all of the local music shops, and I haven't found a banjo that is in my price range, or one that sounds good! I am really into country and bluegrass music. I am a very fast learner, and I feel that a true "beginner" banjo wouldn't be best for me. Does anyone have any suggestions for which banjo for me to buy? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

First- Too bad, another soul is soon to be lost to the lower circles of Hades reserved for Banjo Addicts Next - What is your price range? Are you mainly interested in Bluegrass, or do you like oldtime music? Actually, take a look at the Goldtones that are available through this site, or check out Musician's Friend. A good beginners instrument is probably going to be in the $200 - $400 US range. I would also look at the Deering Good Time II (with resonator), but I don't know if they are available through ezfolk. Welcome to the banjo world. Brad

There Deerings are here: http://www.ezfolk.com/instruments/banjo/Deering/deering.html The GoldTones are here: http://www.ezfolk.com/instruments/banjo/Gold_Tone/gold_tone.html After spending a few days reading about banjos, and taking recomendations from you'all I ordered a Goldtone CC100R from the link above. So far I've had the opportunity to play Deerings, Fenders, and Samick at local shops, and my buddy has a Rogue. My Goldtone hasen't arrived yet, but when it does, I'll have the opportunity to compare and do a write up here. I've also noticed that Washburn and Dean make some nice banjos, but I don't know anything about them. Washburn has a sweet looking $200 model, but it's not included in the ezFolk links...maybe something Richard could add? Hey Dean... thanks for pointing that out. That's a new offering from Music123. I added a link to it on the Washburn banjo page... http://www.ezfolk.com/instruments/banjo/Washburn/washburn.html While I was there I noticed yet another new Washburn banjo -- it's a B8 banjo pack. There's not much info on it but it says it retails for $379 and includes a gig bag, picks, and a book of some sort. The price is the same as the B6 ($199.99) but it says it's a savings of 47% whereas the B6 is a savings of 28% off retail.
