I just downloaded the chords. I'm sure I can get Ira to lay down a version with me.

By the way, I love the idea of being able to get together with other ezfolks.

If I can get Tim3Finger to do the vocals...I'm in on the Down and out song...sounds like a blast:)

Hanging for a weekend with the ezFolk crowd would really be a blast!

I'm in on that one. I've been playing with the chords w/a thumbtack piano sound and uke. This will be fun.

"Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out"

I resembled that remark some years ago! Sounds OK to me. Now I just have to dig out the guitar and work on it some, then try to adapt it to clawhammer banjo (should be an interesting project).

I'm already on it.

That sounds pretty unanimous... let's do it!

I guess the next thing to do is record the song. I'll be watching for the song name in the new songs and as soon as somebody does a recording and uploads it to their own page I'll make a special page for it and will put all of the recordings in there as different artists record it. You can also leave it on your own page.

This could actually be an ongoing project so there doesn't have to be a cut-off time for the song to be recorded. We'll just add a new song every three months or so and people can jump in wherever they want to. We'll create a special station for all the recordings, such as the "Nobody Knows You" station, where people can while away the hours listening to 20 different recordings of the same song.

It'll be fun. Who's first??

Ok, I'm in.
But...are you ready for a Celtic-Blues?!??!

I don't know what could happen but it'll be fun for sure!
:)

Happy picking!

Ok, people! My version of "Nobody Knows You" has been uploaded. This is the finger-picking guitar version I learned in '63 while attending University.

Hope you enjoy, and can improve on it - the vocal leaves much to be desired, but I wanted to get it up early.

Way to go Brad... first one out of the gate. Maybe you'll be the answer to a trivia question one of these days. I look for this to be an ongoing project and hopefully we'll get a lot of different versions of this song and then more songs as we add them one at a time (we'll figure out how often after this one settles down).

I don't have time to add a special page for it this morning but will do it sometime this evening.

I'm still looking for ideas about what we can call this project other than "This Here Song We're All Recording" so if anybody's got any ideas let me know. Some possible words to use might be:

collective
joint
unified
shared
co-op

... such as "The ezFolk Collective" or "ezFolk Co-Op Song" or whatever. Help me out folks. I'm sure there are a lot of other words that would work. Somebody put your thinking cap on.

Thanks Brad! I knew I had that song in my head, and had heard a buddy sing it about 6 months ago...but I needed you to turn that light back on! I'm going to try to get Tim3Finger to start working on it with me, so we can join in. Very nice!:):):)

Here are some chords that I copied and pasted from one of the tab sites. There are other arrangements, some with (different) chords and some with tab, that you can find on the Internet, but this can help you get started working on your own arrangement...

NOBODY KNOWS YOU WHEN YOU'RE DOWN AND OUT- Derek and the Dominos

  C                E  A                A7  A
Once I lived the life of a millionaire
Dm             A  Dm
Spent all my money, just did not care
F              F7      C      C/B    A
Took all my friends out for a good time
D7                     G7
Bought bootleg whisky, champagne and wine

Then I began to fall so low
Lost all my good friends, I did not have nowhere to go
If I get my hands on a dollar again
I'm gonna hang on to it till that eagle grins, yeah

Cause no, no, nobody knows you
When you're down and out
In your pocket, not one penny
And as for friends, you don't have any

When you finally get back up on your feet again
Everybody wants to be your old long-lost friend
Said it's mighty strange, without a doubt
Nobody knows you when you're down and out

When you finally get back upon your feet again,
Everybody wants to be your good old long-lost friend
Said it's mighty strange
D7                D#7 E7 F7
Nobody knows you
                  F7 E7 D#7 D7
Nobody knows you
                 G7                      C  F7  C G7 C
Nobody knows you   when you're down and out

D#7: x x 1 3 2 3  E7: x x 2 4 3 4  F7: x x 3 5 4 5
F7 (in verses): x x 1 2 1 1   A7: x 0 2 2 2 3

(from Layla, 1970)

Hey, Richard,

How about:
"The EZFolk Collective Joint Unified Shared Co-Op Song of The Times" ?
:hammer:

Or is that too blatant? :summer:

Brad... that's a perfect name. Kind of hard to remember though... let's just call it co-op for short.

I'm not so sure "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" was copyrighted 1922. Most all of the reference I find (other than pdmusic.org) list the copyright as 1923. It seem quite possible pdmusic.org has it wrong. Does anyone have or know of the original sheet music or know of an original recording from before 1923, or have some other proof the song is out of copyright? I'm always very careful to verify this before I release something for unrestricted downloads.

Brian... beats me whether it was 1922 or 1923. My first thought was that it was definitely 1923 so I didn't want to mess with it. Then somebody pointed out that it was listed as 1922 at pdmusic.org, which I thought was great since it's such a good song.

I'm really not overly concerned about it though because I think it's iffy enough that nobody will complain, and if they do we can just delete it and replace it with 40 different versions of Amazing Grace.

I think next time around we should probably reach a little farther back. Anybody know any good Stephen Foster songs?

Is there a place on the net where I can hear some Stephen Foster songs?

I'm still learning...

I'm sure there are some Stephen Foster MP3s around the Internet but they're probably pretty scattered. Back when the original MP3.com was around there were a lot on there. NOS just uploaded a Stephen Foster song last week... Oh Susanna.

I'm definitely planning on doing some soon, which is one reason I created a "Stephen Foster" genre. There's a new Stephen Foster CD (it came out the end of August) that features people like John Prine, Suzy Boguss, Alison Krauss, Roger McGuinn, and others. It's great. I've been listening to it for a couple months now and there are a lot of good songs on it with modern arrangements. It's called "Beautiful Dreamer -- The Songs of Stephen Foster." You should be able to find it in any good local music store but if not here's a link to it in the ezFolk store...

I'm not sure 'Ol Steve would recognize my version. LOL!

I have been having a ball with that thing though. I've already edited it 3 different times since I sent it up. Maybe somebody'll pick it up for a movie scene.... home movies, perhaps?

I "stole" a couple of vintage Stephen Foster sheet music books from E-Bay yesterday ($5 plus shipping.) I love that song "Beautiful Dreamer" and several others look recognizable.

I like the idea of using this guy the next time around.

Did ya catch my new "Down & Out"? Threw in some dirty piano. Want to make sure it gets to the co-op page.

UF... you'll love the Stephen Foster music when you get familiar with it. He was really a genius at creating beautiful melodies. I just posted a couple of Stephen Foster songs that I recorded a while back. Nothing fancy for sure, just acoustic guitar on Beautiful Dreamer and clawhammer banjo on Oh Susanna. I did them to correspond to the tablatures on the ezFolk site.

Beautiful Dreamer   HiFi  LoFi

Oh Susanna   HiFi  LoFi

Of course I recorded Oh Susanna more plain vanilla than NOS did it, but that's one of the great things about the Stephen Foster tunes... you can use them any way you want to since they're in the public domain. So you can record them just the way you think they might have been written or play around with the melody or lyrics all you want to.

Alan and Ira... hope you don't mind that I changed the genre on your recording over to the "Stephen Foster" genre... maybe we can get something going in there. If that's not okay you can always move it (or make me do it).

:hat:
