All right, so now I have my new iMac computer (it's a lo-o-og story)! After figuring out that I had to buy an iMic to record directly into the computer, I have recorded a test track into Garage Band.
However, when I saved it to disc, it saved as an mp4x (I don't remember what the 'x' was). Is this the new standard? Will it be uploadable and playable on ezFolk? And, how do I save it as a .wav file so I can make CD's from it?
Inquiring minds want to know. I discovered that my good old standby nTrack is not available for the iMac, so I will be playing around with Garage Band and Audacity.
Any help appreciated.

Brad

I don't know if there is an easier way, but this is what I do to convert the m4a generated by Garage Band to mp3 (or wav, etc):

From Garage Band do Share, Export Song To Disk.

Go into iTunes, Preferences, Advanced, Importing. You can choose MP3 or WAV encoder. Whatever you choose for this importing setting is a default for the context menu for conversion in iTunes. (after you make this setting once, it is remembered and you don't have to do this step each time)

Import your garage band song into iTunes. An easy way to do this is to simply double click the m4a file. Within iTunes right click your song, select "convert selection to MP3 (or WAV whichever you chose earlier). It will generate a new file in the same iTunes/iTunes Music directory as the original, just as the new type with a new suffix (ie .mp3 or .wav).

This is the procedure I use to convert songs from m4a to mp3. But, I am pretty sure I have been successful uploading m4a files directly to ezfolk. They seem to be converted automatically somewhere. So if your target it ezfolk, you should be able to just do the Share/Export Song To Disk from Garage Band, this will render the song to m4a, then you can send the m4a to ezfolk.

I haven't burned CDs much, so I'm not sure if you actually need to convert to wav before doing that or not. I think you just create a new burn folder, drag your songs to it, and burn away... I haven't done this in a long time, but I remember it being pretty intuitive. I don't remember having to do any conversion of format, etc.

I have found that garage band is easier to use than Traction (what I used on Windows), but it doesn't have a lot of the more advanced features I was used to... I still tend to just use Garage Band for recording, even though I have installed the mac version of Traction, just because it is easy to use, can save settings and effects for different instruments, etc.

I know this looks like a bunch of steps and seems complicated, but once you setup iTunes to import/export the format you want to deal with, it is really quite quick and easy.

There may be problems in my instructions because I typed all this from memory. If so, I appologize and will be happy to correct if you have further questions. I hope this information helps.

Okay, Just went through it again, and it is easier than I indicated above...

In Garage Band, use Share->Send Song to iTunes. Then in iTunes, you can convert the file to another format by right clicking the song and selecting "Convert Select to X", where X is configurable in the iTunes,Preferences,Advanced,Importing screen.

If you want to make a CD, you should be able to simply create a playlist in iTunes, drag the songs to it that you want on the CD, right click on the playlist and select "Burn Playlist To Disc". I haven't tried this myself yet, I just noticed this meny entry in the playlst context menu.

Sorry to spam you like this... Just trying to be helpful.

No spam - thanks.

I am not sure that I will stick with GB, I will have to play with it for a while longer. Audacity and my favorite nTrack record as .wav files as original tracks, then I can edit, add effects, etc, then mix down to a mixed .wav file and/or mp3 file.

I like the .wav files because there is no loss with them, and the older CD players will play them but not the .mp3 files.

Sure wish nTrack was available for the Mac.

I'll keep you posted on what happens.

Yep. Tracktion works with wav files too and was more powerful for editing, etc than GB. I have installed it on my mac, but have not used it yet. GB has been enough for me to get by. I keep thinking I will go back to traction, but never do...

NOTE: I am using a Mackie Spike as the recording interface. Haven't' check out the iMic yet. The Spike comes with Traction. That's was how I originally got used to using that recording software... The Spike works great on the Mac (actually better than it did on Windows for me).

Good luck!

I don't know about either traction or the spike.
The iMic is a USB item that allows input to the iMac either from a mic or from a line (which I think means I can plug my stereo speaker outputs into the Mac to burn CDs of my old LPs without frying the sound card - I hope!).  $40 at the Apple shop yesterday when I went to get a manual to learn about this new computer that is totally different from PC Windows 98se.

Dusty-
Thanks, that looks interesting. I've bookmarked it and will have to do some browsing.
