Autumn --
my favourite time of year --
a time, at once, of change  and timelessness --
a time of reflection and reminiscence...

I don't think that anyone will ever capture Autumn as exquisitely as Joni Mitchell did in her 'Urge for Going', nor that anyone will ever capture that song as exquisitely as Tom Rush did.

Unfortunately, that song is off limits here on ezFolk, because it's copyright.

Nevertheless, for us mere mortals I am offering an Autumn Song Swap.

Dig deep.  You MUST have some songs and tunes suggestive of Autumn -- of time and change, reflection and reminiscence.  Please share them here.

I am offering this one, remixed, (as well as can be from a two-track cassette,) to emphasize the vocal, (such as it is):

Autumn's Child
play hi-bitrate
play lo-bitrate

I have also created this musical slide show of Autumnal photos I have taken, set to 'Autumn's Child', (best viewed full-screen @ 1024X768 resolution):

Autumn's Child Music Slideshow

Hope you enjoy it, and please don't hesitate to post your own contributions to this song swap.

I have a song that uses Autumn as a metaphor:

"Halfway Home"

play hi-bitrate (mp3) (broadband)
play lo-bitrate (mp3) (dial-up)

Hi Tony,

I think this song fits the bill.  Recording quality not great, but the lyrics were from the heart.

Thanks, Gerard, that song is just beautiful!

I'm having a little difficulty hearing all the lyrics, though.  I wonder if you could be persuaded to post the lyrics for viewing?  Adding the 'view lyrics' link to your post would be a real treat!

Tony, what a beautiful slide show (as well as song!). You are quite talented, my friend!

Mike and Gerard (that's my son's middle name) - really enjoyed your songs! Thanks for sharing them.

Autumn is also my favorite time of year. I'll have to start thinking about a song... The only songs I have in my repetoire are others' and copyrighted. Hmmm, does that mean I'll actually have to start writing again??

Amy

Lovely songs everyone and yes Autumn is my favorite as well.  I think it has something to do with knowing the rest of winter lies just ahead and the hope the cyclical regeneration of Spring spurs.

Gerard, I would like to give “The Angels’ Sin” a go if you wouldn’t mind.  I second the request for a posting of the lyrics.

Peace,
Ed

Hi all,

Glad some of you enjoyed the song.  I edited my previous post, to include a "View Lyrics" link.  Thanks for the wake up call Tony.

Ed, I'd be delighted to have any of my songs done by EZ Folk members.  If you ever actually record a version, send me a link.

Gerard

Hi Tony,

Great slide show & music! You remind me a bit of Cat Stevens in your voice! What a neat idea! I remember you mentioning this a while back. I actually do have an tune to share.

you should set up a radio station with all these great tunes!

PS Joni Mitchell  has always been one of my favorites!
PSS Do you know the tune "moonshadow" by Cat Stevens? I think you could really pull it off well! one of my favorites!
PSSS Amy I know of a couple of your fine guitar instrumentals that would fit well!!

Thanks, all!  I really enjoy the opportunity to share music this way.  Must thank Richard, too!

Gerard:  Thanks for the lyrics link.  That song is truly beautiful! -- so wistful -- melodically and lyrically.

Amy:  Thank you so much.  Your words of encouragement are so dear to me.  I know that you will contribute something special to this song-swap.

Ed:  Thank you.  I'm looking forward to a contribution from you.  I'd love to hear your cover of 'The Angels' Sin.

Holly:  Thank you, too for those encouraging words.  Cat Stevens has always been a favourite of mine, and I have noodled with 'Moonshadow', but never really got it down to my liking.  I remembered 'Autumn Wind' when I set out to start this song-swap, and if you hadn't come forward with it I would have come knocking!

I have made radio stations of all the song-swaps I've started on the forum:

May Flowers - HiFi Click here to view the Playlist
May Flowers - LoFi Click here to view the Playlist

Sand and Foam Radio - HiFi Click here to view the Playlist
Sand and Foam Radio - LoFi Click here to view the Playlist

and will do the same with this one -- soon!

Brad:  In answer to your characteristically curmudgeonly complaint, I have started a Desert Songs song-swap thread just for you.

Thank you for your generosity Gerard I will definitely post any recording I make of your song.  My pleasure Tony, unfortunately my recording computer has been down for some time so it may be a bit before I record the song but I will certainly share whatever I do record.

Peace,
Ed

I have uploaded a new song to include in this song-swap -- Island a song about a man entering the Autumn of his life...

Holley, I'm sorry to be so late doing this, but I've been pretty tied up lately.  Thanks to a delightful Autumn Nor'easter this weekend, I've finally had the time to catch up on my postings and uploads.  'Autumn Song' Radio is finally put together:

 Autumn Song - HiFi

 Autumn Song - LoFi

Alas, there are only five songs on it.  I have one or two more I can contribute, but I sure would love to get more contributions from more of my ezFolk friends.

You MUST have some songs and tunes suggestive of Autumn -- of time and change, reflection and reminiscence.  Any songs posted will be added to the 'Autumn Song' playlist.

Autumn is my favorite season along the North Coast, even if around here it means lots of rain, fog, and a return to the laborious task of mowing grass and plucking weeds. My little farm this evening is one big mud puddle.

But autumn it is, and I love it. I've got a song on my music page that covers the seasons (Gonna), though autumn and winter are the only seasons specifically mentioned

Thanks, Chris and Mike

Chris... you know how much I love that song.  I'm in the process of translating it into English verse.  Maybe I could post an English version when it's done?

Mike... you've really captured the mellow sound of the Autumn rain in this one.

Bien sûr Tony! Tu peux traduire en Anglais! Tu n'as même pas à le demander, c'est un honneur que tu me fais.

 Bien cordialement

Wow. The metaphor of sitting around in a circle, swapping songs gives me a shiver. I'm glad to sit in. Tony suggested i share one with you. I've only been here a couple of days, and i'm still learning the ropes, but some of of you have already made me so welcome, it's hard to express.

Here's one of my Autumnal pieces for you.

{I don't know how to create the links yet, but Tony sent me a private message with the links to copy and paste. I hope this works (here goes nothing). If this doesn't work, Tony, just go ahead and pop it in another entry for me. I'll get it figured out eventually.}

Arpeggio of Leaves
Play HiFi
Play LoFi

Here's a little poem of a story i wrote to go with it (and i've also been putting haiku into my lyrics field, which Tony noticed. Thanks Tony :-).

The leaves turn to golden and red, quaking in the October breeze... The rustle of fallen leaves, scuttling across the path.. i pull up my collar, and push my hands deeper into my pockets as i walk along, the wind picking up, and howling faintly through bare trees along the way.

Coming is the season Kurt Vonnegut called 'the Locking' -- that long cold silent time before Winter. For now, i nuzzle my face lower into my scarf, and think of the Autumn beauty about me. I have lived through many Winters. There will come an Autumn which will be my last. I sometimes think these things, as the leaves turn golden and red, quaking in the October breeze.

a chilly landscape,
a breeze scattering the leaves,
so quiet the birds.
