Hi Friends,

Who do you just love to listen to? The one group or person that you always stop to listen to, sort of like when you come across that one perfect movie when surfing the channels on your TV.

Its tough not to listen to any and all bluegrass/oldtime music----but ones I always stop and listen to are Tim O'Brien, Yonder Mountain String Band, Steep Canyon Rangers, ReelTime Travelers, David Holt, and Mountain Heart.  I could go on and on, but I think ya'll get my point.  Have fun pickin'.

That's a tough question since I enjoy banjo music so much, its tough to narrow it down.  But, i think uncburr nailed it on the head with David Holt.  He is the pride of North Carolina, a good picker, storyteller, grammy award winner, and a really nice guy.  And bonus to me, I get to hear him play tomorrow on the NCSU campus! :)

Greasystrings, you're dead on about David Holt.  That sounds like a great opportunity to see him over at NC State. If I wasn't such a die hard UNC fan, I might even consider making a trip over there:D.  I was fortunate to speak with him once after a show in Charlotte, NC------super guy.  If anyone has access to NC Public TV, he hosts a show called "Folkways" that never disappoints.

I forgot to mention one of my super duper favorites when I posted before----the Kruger Brothers.  I highly recommend all of their albums, but especially "Carolina Scrapbook."  3 CD set that features all kinds of awesome stuff.  Pick it up.

Ditto on David Holt. He's an amazing player, not only on clawhammer banjo but just about everything else too. I took a week-long workshop that he taught back in about 1977 or 1978, and I think he had only been playing clawhammer a couple of years at the time and he was already outstanding. His "Grandfather's Greatest Hits" CD is one of my all-time favorites.

Uncburr... I noticed we're practically neighbors. Have you ever been involved with the Charlotte Folk Society? I'm a member but don't get over there as often as I like.

Richard----I've been stuck up in Baltimore, MD the past four years finishing up some school, so I haven't been around the Charlotte area as much as I'd like. Once I graduate in May, I'm certainly looking into joining the Folk Society that you mentioned. I dind't even know there was one! Maybe I'll see you there!

Hi,  I mostly listen to old time banjo players that are dead now. May all time favorite banjo player is Wade Ward and he was one heck of a fiddle player as well. He learned to play both banjo and fiddle from his brother Crocket who was an incredible old time fiddle player. Wade's music is not easy to find on cd but I have managed to find some compilation type cd's with one or two of his tunes on them. I also found some LP's on ebay and will be transfering them onto cd if I can ever put my banjo down long enough to do that. I also love to listen to Clarence Ashley, another outstanding old time clawhammer player. Although I mostly listen to clawhammer style players, I still love to listen to Roscoe Holcomb. He played two finger style but he is right up there with Wade Ward in my book, when it comes to old time banjo playin'.

Don't we have any Dwight Diller fans in this forum.  I can sure pass the time away listen to one of his recordings.  Real "old time"  WVa clawhammer style.  Just a pleasure to hear him play.

Mike
