It's been a few days. I used light gauge strings and that may have been a mistake. They move out of the way and slide a bit. When I change them, I'll go heavier. I've cut a blank out of a hunk of oak to carve a higher than normal bridge. I made the action too low. More on that as it progresses. I had asked about the lid of the cookie can acting as a resonator. Mine won't fit, so the jury is still out. I didn't cut the tin down so the lid should have fit, but it seems to have deformed just a bit. You can't see it. But the lid is off by a thick hair. I've decided not to put the guitar Grovers on because last night I went to a house concert and a lady there played an old Vega. It had the same DNA as the neck on the banjoreo. She had replaced her OEM pegs with better geared banjo machines. But the look was great. I have that now. Guitar machines would ruin that. I'm working on a demo piece. Don't go away.

Why do people do this?!? I brought the banjoreo in to work today to show the few people who play related music (and to show one rather good wood carver). Along the way a few others drifted by. Several people said, "Are you going to make and sell them?" And the variation, "I bet people would pay a lot for something like that." Or the really irritating, "It's so cute," even if it is. One or two daid,""Are you putting it on eBay?" AAAAaaaaaaaaarrrrRRRRRRRGGGGGGgggggghhhhhHHHHHH!!!!!!! Like I have a stash of old tenor necks hanging around. (Actually, I have one more, but that's not the point). I made this because it was fun to do. Period. End of epic. Not everything is or should be a commercial endeavor. It was like anything done even remotely well has to have a price-tag to justify the effort. I was oddly bummed out.

Philj- I think a lot has to do with the mentality of today's society - if it doesn't make you money, it isn't worth doing. And, although I hate to say it, it ties in with the thread by another member. Thank goodness my priorities (and yours, it seems) are a little straighter! Still waiting for the sound file. I bought 2 strips of Popular yesterday for my neck. Wow, flash back to the short time I worked for a luthier. He was a miserable scoundrel but he had some need skills. He built a banjo long neck once. When you said poplar it reminded me of how he did it. He used two maple pieces. He formed the blank for the neck by glueing five plie of hardwood veneer together between the two pieces of maple. As I recall, he used ebony, oak, rosewood, oak, ebony. The veneer would add a great deal of stiffening and (hopefully) obviate the need for a truss rod. And it would (and did) look great. He stencilled the tuning board of a Gibson Mastertone but changed it a bit and used a pantograph to transfer the stencil to the blank. Bandsaw, rasps, files, square acres of sandpaper and an odd tool called a spokeshave later, the neck was complete. He carved the tuning board directly out of the blank. My instincts would have used a steam table to bend the headstock. I think it would have been stronger. But he said the maple and veneer construction was strong enough. Besides, his steam table was a salvaged bathtub with electric emersion heaters, venting steam up to a surface filled with bench dogs/vises and covered by a sheet metal lid. Dangerous, er...yes. But it worked. I think he purchased a LN fretboard complete from someone, (Vega ?) (I know he used a new already existing fretboard) and built the neck to fit it's proportions. That sonovabitch still owes me a month's salary. It's been about 40 years. What are the odds of collecting. (Yeah, I agree.) There's a state-of-the-art photo studioin my company. The head of it is a C&W fan and I showed him the banjoreo. He asked to take a picture of it. Did a great job. The attached is a reduced GIF of it. Then he said, whan you sell t on eBay, cut me in. I promised to do exactly that... when I sell it on eBay. Attachment: Phil-Banjoreo.gif (Downloaded 22 times)

Appreciate the kind words and support. Question: Is a song in the Alan Lomax book safe to post. I'm working on Fishing Blues, melody from the book. Taj Mahal does a signiture version of it though. Opinions? It sounds good on the new little critter.

 - Ta-Dah! ecce Fishing Blues. Not really polished. But fun. It's in A-major if anyone what's to loop it and join in. Or I can send separate guitar and banoreo tracks. Added later: I managed to get the cover of the cookie tin on. It does modulate the tone a bit. I think for the better. It does not increase the volume of sound. Probably because it is just a cookie can lid (I mean who are we fooling). I didn't cut a hole in it which might have tossed more sound into my mid-section. It also adds a bit of demensional stability and perhaps it won't go out of tune so damned fast. I'll be working on the new bridge over the weekend. Sat in at a jam last night; a guy there was a good singer and picker and had perfect pitch. He disagreed with my tuner about pitch. Between that and the inherit transtonal-dislocation of the banjoreo (neat term for an instrument that's a bitch and a half to keep in tune), I think I may have hurt his emotional well-being.
