Wait a minute, let me back up. The day he came home from the hospital, his Dad played some bluegrass for him on the 5-string.
Jump ahead six years. He's had passing interest in the guitar and can really wail on Guitar Hero and Rock Band. He's even started lessons at a school that specializes in young children. Need method. They have the kids picking out melodies to popular songs first. Not chords as I would have imagined.
Jump back a couple of years to out threads on cookie tin banjos. I was inspired to make one I called a banjoreo (banjo+cookie). Neat little things. Plays fine (if a little tinny). A banjo student read about it on Banjo Hangout and asked to see it. My instruments rotate throughout the house. So it came up from the fret corral in the basement and ended up on the wall near Frankenbanjo (another story already told).
Jump ahead to last weekend.
"Grandpa, you have a kid's sized banjo!" I showed him the D-7 chord and how he automatically had a G. He picked it all day. He wants his own. (In truth, this little guy, the banjoreo that is, would not stand up to a kids attention for long.) So I'll make him his own.
I have the tin standing by. I'm looking for plans for a neck. While I have two tenor necks and a 5 string on hand, they're (for a bunch of reasons) not right.
Next step however is to see if his interest remains. I hope so. But he's six.
