Hey, CMac-

Yeah, the Rogue is a decent starter banjo. Glad you are enjoying it.

gDGBD is the standard tuning for most bluegrass, folk, and a lot of oldtime tunes, so you got that right for starts. I would suggest that if you are trying to play clawhammer, forget about picks (even thumb picks). The clawhammer site here is a good place to start, as are several of the tapes/DVD's listed. I really liked the Bob Carlin tapes, and still go back through them every once in a while just to review (and to listen to some darned good clawhammer playing).

And don't let "purists" insist that you have to play an openback to play clawhammer (even if I prefer the sound of the openback, personally). In gigs and live performances, you probably need the resonator to be heard (I don't have that problem, my only audience/backup are the Cactus Wrens and Mourning Doves on the hill behind my house).

:thumbs2: Keep on pickin'
Brad

Thanks for splitting this to another topic.....and thanks for the advice!  I am thinking pretty seriously about buying a good instructional DVD.....since I don't know anyone that plays the banjo - I figure that would be the best direction for me to go.  I bought an instructional DVD made by Pete Huttlinger on how to play the songs of John Denver - and it has proven to be an incredible learning tool.  I would imagine that this would be the way to go for me.

So would you recommend the Bob Carlin stuff right off the bat?

BTW - Yes Dean - I still have all my teef.:bluelight::talk:

Oh Boy, Oh Boy

What teef Cmac? You can't be a banjo player and have all yo teff. :crazy:At least one missing in de front is bout right. I'm from Arkansas, trust me on this.:farmer:

Well EZfolk, the B-I blues band is branching out and diversifying. Dean (1four5) is playing his reso almost exclusively, Colin ( Cmac ) has got a banjo now, and me is trying to learn Bass. All we need is some to play the washboard and harmonica now. :rock:Any takers?

Tim

Well - I went and ordered both of Bob Carlin's instructional DVD's tonight!  They are on backorder - but should ship within a week or so.  I have had such good luck learning that way with the guitar - I hope that I can get similar results with these!  I sure wish I knew a banjo player locally (I am sure there are many in the area - I just don't know any!) - it would really help to sit down and watch for a while!

Thanks for the tips banjo brad!

CMac-

They should do a good job of getting you started. Bob Carlin is a great instructor - I would love to get to a camp where he is teaching.

You will see where I got my version of "Liberty" and hear a good basic list of old-time clawhammer tunes.

Enjoy
