I've tried several contact style pickups before, but I've found that a condensor mike works best with a banjo.  Other banjo players that I've talked to prefer to play into a mike, as well.  Keep in mind that most condensor mikes require "phantom power," which is an electrical circuit that is built into most mixing boards, but probably not built into a guitar amp.  In that case, a regular dynamic microphone will work.

If you'd prefer to use an instrument pickup, try the K&K Banjo Twin model:

i have to link this board.

I was on the Avett Brothers discussion board and they also were talking about banjo pickups. the majority were in favor of a lapel mic that can be purchased at radio shack and then a 1/4 inch plug is soldiered.

for what its worth, follow the link and chk out the board. they have pics posted.

thanks for all the help so far. I plan to buy a pickup next week. still cant decide on which one yet.
