Can any one suggest a fix for my banjo, The 5th string peg pull out of the neck and I have put it back and now the hole is to large for it, :(  It is a geared tuner.

I have thought about filling the hole and redrilling. It is a tappered hole .

So till I get it fixed, I will have a 4 string to play :talk:       Maybe some one else has had this happen and knows what to do.

Thanks in advance for advise.   Charlie

Charlie... I had the same problem one time and just took a toothpick and put it in with the tuner and it fit as snug as a bug in a rug.

That worked fine for me. I'm a little mechanically challenged though so maybe some of these guys who work on stuff all the time will have a better solution.

:hat:

You know Richard, I tried that also, but after a good strumming it came out again, so maybe some one will have the magic answer.  Thanks

Charlie-

Try this page at frets.com:

http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Luthier/Technique/Banjo/Gear5thPeg/gear5th.html

It has a discussion on installing a 5-string tuning peg, and should help.

(Incidently, http://www.frets.com is a page every fretted instrument player should have bookmarked, in my opinion. (I have no connection or interest in this site or business other than as a resource.)

:2banjo: Keep on pickin'

Thanks Brad,   I have contacted Saga about it and they instructed me to drill the hole

out and put a plug in and redrill it, and that is what I am doing,  the hole was drilled to close to the finger board and the top of the neck was to thin to hold.  The tapperd tuner after it pulled out would just fall out, so I believe that this will hold when I finish it,

Thanks for the web site and onfo.

Charlie

I disagree with the instructions unless you are better than average with woodworking in general and instruments in particular.

The plug should be cut from hardwood. It you use pine or fir, the problem will just come back.

You still have to install the plug (gluing and curing well). Even with a harwood plug, you still have to bore a tapered hole into the plug. Unless the plug is pretty big, you run the risk of splitting the plug.

I would suggest the following. Go to a better lumber yard or wook-workers outlet. Look for hardwoork veneer that matches or comes close to the wood and color of the neck. Look for paper thin veneer. Wrapped several ply into the existing hole. Firt put a thin coating of yellow glue into the hole (use a brush), then glue each ply. You don't have to wait until it's dry. At this point (with a rubber or plastic hammer) reinstall the peg. The peg will act as a clamp. Wait for the glue to completely set and you're good to go.

Thanks Phil,  I have already done the repair and holds real good so far,

The big problem was that they had drilled the hole to close to the bottom of the finger board and it was like a 3/4 hole in the neck,

Idid find a hardwood dole rod and drilled and installed it and with a tapper reamer and sized it a tight fit and I have been playing for a week and I believe it is going to hold, Time will tell.

I will remember your fix if I or anyone else needs to do the same repair.

Charlie

Just trying to help. If it held for a week it will hold period. That's with the assumption that the glue bond is not disturbed. Depending on the glue; high heat (sunlight is perfectly okay), moisture (sweat is okay, paddling a canoe is not) and shock (try not to use a hammer on the peg)can break the glue bond.

I was taught to always try the repair that removes the least amount of wood.
