Following is a review of my latest ukulele - isn't UAS fun?! DISCLAIMER: Now, I'm by no means an expert on ukuleles but I have been around stringed instruments all of my life as I grew up in a family that lived and breathed country and gospel music well into my teen years. I regret never asking for a stringed instrument for myself - I played a wind instrument in school - but it's never too late to learn! I will be posting up reviews on all of my ukes and hope that someone may get a little use from the views of this novice player. Kala KA-KB Koa Baritone Ukulele # of Frets: 19 Fretboard: Rosewood with perloid fret markers Neck: Solid Mahogany Top Material: Koa Side Material: Koa Back Material: Koa Tuners: Quality chrome diecast geared tuning machines Factory strings: Probably GHS but I had it restrung with Aquila Nylagut Baritone strings in the key of G (EBGD) My impressions: The finish on this uke is satin and nearly flawless - just a few tiny 'bumps' here and there. The frets are smooth and the action is very good, the neck feels solid, the fretboard is smooth and not discolored like the fretboard on my Kala Tenor. This baritone uke has a lot of volume and a very 'guitarish' sound (is guitarish a word? ha!). The strings are still stretching on it but it is closer to being in tune every time I pick it up so I believe that there will be no problems with keeping it in tune once the strings settle down. The maple bindings are a nice classy touch and the soundhole and upper body binding is lined with a perloid inlay that is not overwhelming in design - nice. I purchased this uke from MusicGuyMic in Hawaii. He included a nylon covered hardshell lined case and set-up including restringing with the Aquila strings. I have to say that of all the ukes I own and that have been set up by the seller, Michael's work is definitely above and beyond any others. He also installed a strap button for the day when I am brave enough to stand up in front of folks other than my family and play a tune. The feel, tone, and quality of this ukulele for the price is impressive. Expect to pay between $300.00 and $325.00 for this uke.
