Hi folks and all of you folk musicians out there! I am a new member of this forum and first off I would like to say "HI" to all of you out there!! I am a retired (55+) age guy who has taken the leap, so to speak, and has decided to learn to play the acoustic guitar. I have been looking around at mid-priced guitars for some time now and I have heard very good things about Epiphone's line of Masterbilt guitars. I have also had the opportunity to play a few at some music stores in my area BUT, considering my very limited ability, it is difficult to know exactly how well constructed and how "good" an instrument (value for your money) these Masterbilt guitars really are(?) Anyone out there play one of these or have any recommendations? I am mostly interested in playing traditional folk music with am emphasis on bluegrass and Celtic folk. Thanks!!

At the Different Strummer, the music store owned and operated by Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music, I had played a number of their Epiphone Masterbilt guitars, and a number of them in the showroom did sound very good, to my ears. The only Masterbilts that I didn't like were the ones with the V-shaped neck profile, but that was because of the way it felt when played, not because of its tone. That being said, I also had a chance to play their Blueridge line of guitars, and for about the same price range or lower, I have to say the Blueridge guitars sounded better. It turned out later that the guitar techs at the store agreed - their favorites were the Blueridges. A few months later, I ended up finding the Blueridge model that I wanted but didn't see in the Different Strummer show room, the BR-73 (a deluxe abalone-trimmed 000-sized auditorium guitar) from Music123.com for $450 (it now sells for $640). Both Epiphone and Blueridge are Asian imports.
