"TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON"
Gary Blanchard

Gary has returned to his inspiration for making music, Pete Seeger and the long necked 5-string banjo. The fourteen tracks on this CD present Gary with his custom-made long-necked 5-string banjo, plus 2 tracks with guitar.

Gary's voice reminds me of Glenn Yarbrough, smooth and easy, without any trace of strain. His choice of keys fit his vocal range perfectly, resulting in a pleasant listening experience.

The song selection is a tribute to the ideals and goals of Pete's life, focusing on peace and equality.

Several outstanding tracks  include a completely different version of the Kingston Trio's smash hit, "Tom Dooley." Tom Dula's Lament is more of a love song than the usual tale of murder and hanging. Worried Man Blues is closer to the Old Time style than the harder-hitting Blue Grass versions usually heard. "Tenting Tonight" is a song I remember from summer camps as a child, but I don't remember the verses Gary presents - instead of the happy, joyful camping/hiking song from then, it is actually a melancholy lament about war and lost comrades. Beautifully done.

Pete Seeger applied his own music to verses he read in a Wisconsin hash house and  came up with the humorous "Get Up and Go." He later learned that they are well-known in almost every old-age home in the country.

My personal favorite track is the Woody Guthrie song "This Land Is Your Land." Usually presented as a patriotic paean, the (usually omitted) last two verses show that Woody actually wrote it as an anti-theme to the popular saccharin  "America the Beautiful."

Track List: "Turn, Turn, Turn", "Tom Dula's Lament", "Tenting Tonight", Under the Lee (Original banjo tune by Gary Blanchard)", "Michael Row the Boat Ashore", "Jacob's Ladder", "Hammer Song", "Worried Man Blues", "The Water is Wide", 'The Farmer is the Man", "Get Up and G0", "Banjo Lick (Original by Gary Blanchard)", "The Popular Wobbly", "This Land Is Your Land".

I can recommend this CD, available from Gary's webpage http://WWW.GBandF.com.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I wanted this disc to be a tribute to Pete's spirit as musch as his music. The two original instrumental tracks have nothing to do with Pete but Pete has released several banjo licks over the years that are not really songs. I don't know that Pete ever did Tom Dooley or Tom Dula's Lament, but the song fits his history of presenting traditional folk tunes in a way that might not have been pure, but more pure than the "pop folk" that many of us heard on the radio.

I appreciate that Brad took time to share his thoughts about this CD with others. His is an opinion I trust. (As long as I don't plug in my guitar. :talk:;))

Oh, I'm sure you could still trust my opinion if you plug in.:2angdev:
I'm just not sure you'd be very happy with it (my opinion, that is :scaredblue: )

You are welcome. A steal at $10. Have you considered getting your CDs on emusic? That would be good for me anyways as I get new music credits each month.
