I'm happy to announce that Michael Fox has started producing the Dulcijo for the public for the first time, and ezFolk is the exclusive distributor. Mike has been an outstanding clawhammer banjo player for many years, but for the last several years he's been perfecting the Dulcijo. It's an amazing instrument, unbelievably loud for a 2-pound banjo with an 8-inch head, and it's a breeze to play. In 2003, while playing the Dulcijo Mike was the 2nd runner-up at Fiddler's Grove in the clawhammer banjo competition! That's right... he wasn't playing a banjo... it was the Dulcijo!

I'm still working on the website. We're working on adding more tutorials, videos, and MP3s, but there's quite a bit there already so check it out. We've been working out the production details for months now and the Dulcijo is ready to go. Check out these links for an idea about the Dulcijo...

Video... "What's a Dulcijo?" (starring me)

Video... "Hangman's Reel" (starring Michael Fox & some of his band)

Dulcijo MP3s

If you're looking for a new and fun instrument, be sure to take a look. Your questions or comments are welcome.

Well how about that, I love it

I will just have to sell something on e-bay so I can get my money togeather to buy one of them things,

I have admired Michiel's music with the Dulcijo and wished I had one and now that is possible if I get something sold to pay for it.

I have a lot of dulcimer books with music that I could use with it, can't wait

Charlie

Hey Charlie,

Glad you're interested... I think you'll like it! The head is plastic. Mike originally used a skin head but decided plastic is much better with weather changes and all that.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm trying to get Mike Fox to be more active on here. He's not a real Internetty guy though so I figure I'm lucky if I can get him to check his email every couple of days.

Great instrument, great site and what a band! I looped Windows Media Player, hit full screen and got the best sounding screen saver I ever had.

Well I did it,

I just purchased a Dulcijo and the learning curve starts all over with the Bum-ditty

So I will see how it goes with just 3 strings, can't be to hard, if not I will just us my own method as I do with everthing else.

Hey Charlie,

I think you'll love the Dulcijo. We're working on a lot of videos and tabs and other good stuff to show you different ways to play, and of course you have this forum for any questions that might arise.

We're also hoping that any of the Dulcijo players who are willing will record and share some Dulcijo MP3s in the ezFolk MP3 section so we can have a nice variety of Dulcijo music for people to hear.

You Know I have my computer set up now so I can record on it but I can't figured out how to send it to your site, I am a computer dummy when it comes to these thing and I know it could be simple once I get it worked out. I did buy a Dummy book for home recording but have not dug deep to learn. My 73 year old brain don't work as it use to.

Hey Richard, I got it and I can't put it down, But just long enough to let you know I did get it and I love it,  Serial # 001

I will do a good review on it in a few days, It is so easy to play and sounds great and Micheal set it up good. I believe I can get the bum-ditty down on it in a few days, as you or Michael said,  The tunes just seem to flow out of it.

I 've got to get back to playing

Hey Charlie... Glad to hear to got it! I know the anguish involved in waiting for a new instrument! Been there, done that, and got the T-shirt.

The more you play it, the more those tunes will just jump right out at you. Keep us informed on how you're doing and just holler if you have any questions.

Hope you can figure out how to record and upload some tunes to the Dulcijo genre. Let me know if you need help with that as well.

:thumbs2:

Well it is time that I do a review on the Dulcijo that I recieved this week and had some time to get acquainted with it.

1. It is well thought out on the construction to make it easy to play

2. the material used to built it was great

3. Any one can learn how to play this instrument

I don't know how else to describe it, but I can't put it down.  I walk by it and I have to pick it up and a tune will just come out of it, It will talk to you and say play me, play me.

The only draw back that I see is it plays only in one key, so if you go to a Jam any you will need to take another instrument with you or you will have to retune it often,  But that is what makes it simple to play.

I am glad that I bought it and will never sell this one, I have serial #001

I have not really learn the bum-ditty stroke on it but I can play a lot of tunes already with it and as soon as I get my recording equipment where I can record good enought, I will send a few tunes on it, Never be like Michael Fox or Richard with it but it is the most fun Instrument that I have ever bought.

I have better get back to playing it now or it might start playing by itself

Hello Charlie

I'm glad you got your dulcijo and you like it.  I hope you get as much fun out of it as I have through the years.

You mentioned keys.  The dulcijo like the dulcimer or harmonica is challenging to play in a variety of keys.  Besides the key of D I have found the key of A is easy to achieve.  I play Hangman's Reel in the key of A in the regular AAD tuning.  I play many A tunes using AAE tuning.  Another easy tuning that allows you to play in A is AAA tuning.  This tuning sounds kind of strange at first but I really like it.  It has that low lonesome mountain quality.  I play June Apple in th AAA tuning on ezfolk.  If you get a chance play around with some of these.

Good luck and I would love to hear some of your music on ezfolk.

Thanks

Michael Fox

Well I posted my first song, (Amazing Grace) on my Dulcijo this morning,  Not very proud of it, Tried using a drum background and it over powerd the song and I was listen to it more than the song itself,

I may revise it and just play it by itself, But I will work it out.

Hey Charlie,

That's great considering you've only been playing the Dulcijo about two weeks! As you know, things get better the longer you play an instrument. You might want to put the current date on your copy of your MP3, then re-record it every month or so and see how much it improves over time.

It's a great start though and I'm excited to see somebody recording on the Dulcijo. I'm going to try to get some Dulcijo MP3s recorded myself sometime over the next month.
