I have just built my self a three string dulcijo, and presently have it set up

and tuned (5 1 5 )  g C g . Very playable like this and loads of fun.  Allows

alternate open drone string top or bottom.

My question comes in on the 2nd instrument ,  4 strings,   with one of them being

a short string, and chromatic scale.  I am accustom to playing  a three string stick

tuned in (1 5 1 )  such as CGc  Or DAd.     Finally to the question-- where do I

set the short string for best results.  the root  or the 5th?

Wendell I don't really know for sure about your question,  I tune my tenor banjo 4 string with a high G on the 4th string and that lets me play clawhammer with it with the tunning at gDbe or I guess it would go dDbe or as a short scale ukulele they are tuned gCea

I sure like the looks of your instruments and have copyed some of the plans and hope to build one of them soon, Right now in the process of a hammered Dulcimer and then a cookie tin banjo from your plans next.

Charlie,

Thanks for the input, I will have to see what equivlent my strings will reach and give it a try.  At the present not doing well on a 5 string  like standard banjo tuning of gDGBe the "B" gets  in my way, the note is never where my fingers want to look for it.  Maybe what I really need is g D G e.

Anyway you have me thinking again, now if I can put this little three stringer down long enough to give it a try.
