Just received a Lanikai LU-21B Baritone today from an online store. They run about $99 just about anywhere. This one came with fingerprints all over it. That I can live with of course. The real problem however was the rosewood fretboard. It was extremely rough and appeared not to have been sanded at all. You could almost get splinters just by rubbing your fingers across it. Also, the stain/finish over the entire fretboard was splotchy and in some places it looked totally lacking. I had a $300 Lanakai koa baritone not too long ago and the quality on it was just excellent. Anyone have one of these LU-21B baritones and if so do I have a lemon here or are all of these models like this? I did contact the seller for a replacement and it will be interesting to see what that one looks like.

It appears that I have too much time on my hands as I keep answering my own questions. I did get a replacement for the LU-21B and it is perfect. I guess my first one slipped through the quality control crack. Thanks to myself for the comments.

I bought a Lanikai LU-21B baritone in June 2005 from Musician's Friend. Cost was about $114, and it has been great. Excellent tone and well finished. Have since bought a Bushman Jenny Baritone, costing a bit more, and enjoy it too. But, have to admit, the Lanikai sounds just as nice. Both are fun and glad I have them.

I purchased a few months ago a Lanikai tenor uke from an online source. It did not have any finger prints on it but it did have the rough fretboard. I took some fine grade steel wool and lightly sanded the roughness off the fretboard before putting new strings on it.
