I've "mastered" the chords on a baritone uke, and i play them on my sopranos also.

which is fine when i'm playing alone, but to play along with somkeone else i'd have to tune the soprano like a baritone.

so how do i do that?

can it be done?

ideas?

thanx

Rather than tuning your soprano different,  Why not just play the chords as they are,

If you want to play a G chord on the soprano,  Play it like a D on the baritone.

You really should get a chart and just convert or transpose the chords to what ever key you want to play,  It would really help you to learn this way and then you are not trying to retune all the time.

You can't re-tune a soprano uke to baritone tuning, because the strings would become so slack, that they will sound terrible and will not stay in tune.   You will have to train yourself to play different chord shapes on a soprano if you are playing with another uke player.

Here's how I do it. I count up five notes to go from the Baritone chord shape to the Tenor, Concert, Soprano chord shape. In other words if I play a C chord on the Baritone, I count up five note C D E F G and finger a G chord, which gives me a C chord on the Soprano etc. This is assuming that your using a DGBE tuning on the Baritone and GCEA tuning on the others.

Transposing is too tough on the fly. You know all the shapes--they're exactly the same on any uke. Just re-learn the names for the soprano tuning if you're playing soprano. It's really not that tough--kind of like learning new chords for alternate guitar tunings.
