So I recently purchased my first uke (a lanakai) and enjoyed the playability but extremely not impressed with it bieng labled as "Koa" (funny how I didnt see the word laminate anywhere on the site where I bought it) so i planned on returning it and bought a nice Pono solid koa tenor a/e cutaway that I'm happy with. While I was looking at ukes online I noticed for $20 cheaper than my "koa" uke I could get the lanakai solid spruce top 8 string electric tenor, and decided to exchange rather than return. My problem is this: I <3 Baritone tuning for guitar covers. My pono sounds best strung GCEA rather that DGBE using one low baritone D string. The 8 string is going to be unique. So I figure I need a baritone also. I was satisfied with the playability of Lanikai, and imagine my solid top 8 string will sound somewhere between the laminate and the pono. My question is whats a good mid level baritone uke? I have been looking at Kalas, and there are some good deals on some stuff, but it's hard to know what has a solid top and what doesnt. Anyone have a Kala or Lanikai solid top baritone? I own the Lanikai 8-string solid spruce top tenor uke with the built-in pickup. I replaced the stock strings with Aquila Nylgut, and it does have a very rich, loud soud. Note that with 8-strings and the 2 lowest strings paired with higher octave strings, you will have gG-cC-EE-AA tuning, reminiscent of the 12-string guitar. I own 2 solid spruce top baritone ukes, the $60 Amigo AMB-7 and the $180 Oscar Schmidt OU53-S. The Amigo plays louder than the Oscar Schmidt. Lanikai also makes a solid spruce top baritone, the SB, that sells for $149; it's hard to find a dealer that sells it now, but I've found one: http://jacksmusicstore.com/catalog/ftd-ins-bum-l~s-b
