So, ezfolk forums have been one of my main go-to sources of info in my quest for a first uke. I play guitar, bass, and mess around on didgeridoo and low-d whistle. I've owned an Oscar Schmidt mando in the past, and was really pleased with it. I've also owned a Kay classical guitar as well...also very pleased. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a bari uke, and was interested in your feedback, comments, etc. Solid top...laminated top...it's all the same to me, as I'm likely not going to be doing any performing or serious recording with the bari. Mostly, it'll be a front-porch or living room player. That said, I'd like it to be durable and have geared tuners. I originally wanted the Oscar Schmidt spruce model...also looked at their mahogany model. I've heard lots of good about Kala as well. I've also looked at Johnson (Johnson/Savannah) and more. But I'm really thinking about a Kay. It seems to be a good match for my requirements and useage. The price is good too...I can afford to pick up a decent case for it if I go with that. Any feedback, thoughts, comments, or verbal abuse you'd like to throw at me...have at it.

Go with a Lanikai baritone, solid spruce top, if possible. It's reasonably priced (about $150 or less) and well constructed.

Any reason that you might go with the Lanikai over the Oscar Schmidt? What about the Lanikai mahogany (nato) series? Thanks! Last edited on Mon Mar 23rd, 2009 12:14 am by j1n |

Kala or Lanikai. Personally I don't like the cheaper OS line at all. Kala makes some nice ukes, Lanikai and Kala are similar and may be made in the same factory in China, any one with differing info please speak up!

I actually decided to go with a Kay, based on two things... I know from having owned a Kay product in the past that you get a lot of bang for the buck. The other reaon was a review from here, from a member named larry c, that I keep coming back to... http://www.ezfolk.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=5278&forum_id=43&jump_to=36628
