Hey, I just bought my first uke, a baritone lanakai. I love it. Never played a string instrument before but I'm picking up the chords easily enough.

I just need to find a couple of easy songs to start learning (not jingle bells easy, just not foggy mountain breakdown hard) My musical tastes are the beatles, pink floyd, david bowie, ect. Also, are there any good songbooks for beginners? Thanks for the help.

You might want to look at Jumpin' Jim's song books, particularly the one aimed at baritones. Melody line and chords and fingering diagrams (if it is like the rest of the series)

http://www.fleamarketmusic.com/store/

Mel Bay's "101 3 chord songs" might have some tunes you would like. Melody line and chords.

Buddy Griffin's "Happy Time Ukulele Method and Song Book" is a well regarded entry book. Melody, chords, fingering diagrams. Includes Baritone chord fingering in one section.

If you really like the Beatles, Hal Leonard publishes a Beatles fake book. 174 songs, melody, chords and guitar fingering diagrams (which are the same as the baritone plus the 2 bass strings). A beginner would probably not be able to play the complete arrangement though.

And of course, there are several large fake books with a thousand or so songs of all genre. These may have just the chorus and sometimes are simplified.

And Jumbo Jim, The Guitar Guy and Chordie web pages have thousands of songs; you are bound to find songs you like there.

thanks! I've just ordered one of the Jumpin Jim books, I'll look into the others.

so far, I've just been going through piano music books and playing the piano chords. seems to work for the most part but I'd rather have books geared for the ukulele.

Most fake books made for piano are written in the key of C, which works very well for the standard ukulele. (On the baritone, the F chord requires fretting all 4 strings.)

Well, you can always cheat a bit and change the keys of the song to one easier to play -- G and C in your example.

But eventually, you have to work on those chords too.

Well I've ordered a few of the books, still waiting for them to get here. Here's me trying to play "Come Together" using the chords from a fake piano book:

I think it worked fairly well for a first try sort of thing. It's the only thing I've attempted so far.

Since you state that your tastes include the Beatles, take a look at http://beatlesite.info/ It has a bunch of Beatles songs and also shows the finger locations. The chords are for GCEA tuning, but it lists the chords for the DGBE tuning under the neck. Hope this helps.

Hey, I'm in the same boat and I have the exact same instrument. I'm starting with a song which can't get much easier: Achy Breaky Heart. It is simply 4 measures of C and G (or A and E), alternating though out the entire song. With DGBE tuning the C & G chord fingering is trivial. I even performed it in front of (a very forgiving), audience two hours after first picking up the uke.

If you get tired of Billie Ray's lyrics, try Weird Al's at:
