I have just started playing the uke and bought a soprano which I am finding a bit too small for my liking. So I want to get a larger one. My question is, which would be better for me, a baritone or a tenor? I have been playing guitar about a year and a half and am wondering if it would be easier to catch on with the baritone since I would be more familiar with the chord structures. What are everyone's thoughts? Also, how about some recommendations on which uke to get. I don't want to spend more than $150 for uke and case.

I play both. I have the baritone in standard or guitar tuning and keep the tenor in low G. I play almost exclusively fingerstyle; wide variety of music. Tenor is a very nice size to travel around with. Mine is a KoAloha and gets a fairly traditional sound. I do play it a lot, but use it a lot for convenience sake when I want something to play but don't want to lug around a guitar. I am primarily a guitarist, so I think your point about the guitar chords transferring to bari uke is valid, but it is really not that hard to work the transpositions for the tenor uke. My baritone is an Oceana and gets a classical guitar sound. If I am playing with other guitarists I play the baritone as it is easy to share music. If you are not familiar with Oceana check the website: http://www.oceanaukuleles.com/index.html Jon

Jon: Thanks for the reply. What kind of neck width at the nut do I get with a tenor vs a baritone. I find that on the soprano my fingers are just too crowded. Does the tenor have a nice mellow sound?

The baritone will almost always have a wider nut/neck width than a tenor. There are variations within each size, as well. I have an Oscar Schmidt OU53S baritone that has a wider neck than the Amigo AMB-7 (another good-sounding, solid spruce top baritone that costs only about $60). My Hilo tenor has a wider neck width than my Lanikai tenor.![]() Last edited on Thu Jun 18th, 2009 02:56 pm by Will ____________________ Will http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/297/ Loose Change & Friends http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/245/ http://loosechangeandfriends.com The Earth Tones http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/337/ A Bunch Of Coconuts http://abunchofcoconuts.com |

Well, I pulled the plug and ordered a Kala KA-SB, solid spruce top baritone from Compass Music Sales in Florida. They had the lowest price of anyone and threw in a free Ohana gig bag and tuner. I had them upgrade the strings to Aquila strings. They are also doing a free setup, dressing the frets, checking the action, etc and gave me free shipping. So I should have it Monday or Tuesday. I am really looking forward to getting it.

Bshpmark As Will noted, I think there is considerable variability in the neck sizes of ukuleles. As a fingerstyle player the baritone is very accessible, and while I have not played a lot of tenors, the KoAloha is finger friendly as well. My tenor does have a somewhat mellow sound; definitely less "jangly" than some other ukes. It has excellent sustain as well. I use Aquila strings on both. Hope you enjoy your new instrument. To me the other good thing about baritone is that music is easily available because a lot of the published "easy guitar arrangements" concentrate on the top 4 strings--perfect for transition to ukulele. By the way, I am just down the road from you in Montgomery--not really known as a ukulele kind of town. Jon

Nice to make your acquaintance Jon. I am really looking forward to getting the baritone. I just restrung the soprano uke tonight with Aquila strings and the difference in sound is amazing. I had put Martins on it and they made a huge difference but the Aquilas even more. I will eventually add a tenor once I become proficient on the bari and soprano.
