Hi first of all...  I'm soon to buy an Autoharp as i think they are wonderful instruments. There is a song i'm looking to play i believe is called " The Road Gypsies Go" and i saw it played by Billy Connolly at the end of his gig in 1985 when he played infront of a Celebrity Audience ("An Audience with Billy Connolly")  This is a beautiful tune and i was wondering if anyone knew who wrote it, or if it exists as an audio file anywhere, or if anyone has the sheet music for it, or even does anyone play it?!

Basically seeing his tune played is one of the reasons that made me want to learn the Auto harp, i doubt i'll be able to track it down but i'll try my best :)

Hi Donny,

He plays the tune at the end of an Albert Hall performance. I agree it's a great sound. If you go into amazon , look under "Billy and Albert" Live at the Albert Hall. I've never come across the tabs for it though.

Good luck with learning the autoharp.

Cheers, Jet

Hmmmm. . . .

I wonder how you would tab for an autoharp. I don't think Tabledit could handle it, too many strings.

Maybe just a chord sheet?

You've got me curious, now. Will - do you have any ideas on this?

Brad

Brad,

Sorry for the late reply...

I have seen autoharp tabulature in the Meg Peterson authored instructional  autoharp books written during the late 60's/early 70's.   Unlike tabs for other string instruments, the symbols used in autoharp tabs concentrate on telling the player how to strum a chord, rather than targeting a particular string (virtually impossible on a zither-type instrument), and refer to the most commonly taught styles of playing autoharp, involving the wearing of a thumbpick and at least 2 fingerpicks (worn with the curve covering the fingertips).  To use these tabs, the autoharp must be held upright (Maybelle Carter style); a downward arrow indicates a downward strum from the bass strings towards the treble, an upward arrow indicates an upward strum, and two arrows pointing towards each other indicate a pinch-strum where the thumb pick and a finger pick close together in a clawing motion.

Other styles of autoharp tab follow the chord-melody style of playing, where the melody is played along with chordal accompaniment, and the chord changes are much more frequent than those used for simple accompaniment.  Here's an example:
