I have been learning the shade grove tab here and I am wondering what chords I should tell my guitar friends to use. Just G and F? Thanks!

Culley... Are you talking about my banjo arrangement? If so, I'd capo the banjo up 2 frets, then have the guitar play Am and G, like this... (Am)Shady Grove, (G)my little love, (Am)Shady Grove I say, Shady Grove, (G)my little love, (Am)Bound to (G)go a-(Am)way. That's how I like it best. If you didn't want to capo the banjo the guitar should play Gm and F. Hope that helps!

Here are the guitar chords that I use, after experimenting with different combinations of minor and major chords. It may not be the "right" way, but I like to play it this way... (Am)Shady Grove, (G)my little love, (Am)Shady Grove I say, Shady Grove, (C)my little love, (F)Bound to (G)go a-(Am)way.

Yes, your banjo arrangement. So with the capo does that make it A modal? I will have to try it with the capo and see how it sounds... Thanks, culley

That's right, with the capo it's A modal tuning. I think the difference in the chords I play and the chords Will plays is a little bit of a difference in the melody in each of our heads. One of the things about old folk songs like this is that they have been handed down over a long period of time, often changing a little bit at a time depending on who's playing them. The chords I gave you will work with my arrangement but not Will's arrangement, and vice versa. Listen to both and you'll see what I mean... My banjo recording (banjola really)... http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=2&song_id=36&mode=song_hifi http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=2&song_id=36&mode=song_lofi Here's Will's recording on baritone uke... http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=297&song_id=2613&mode=song_hifi http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=297&song_id=2613&mode=song_lofi I think we have the makings of a co-op song here... Here are two more recordings by other artists that are a little different than mine and Will's... Rock Creek Divide... http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=178&song_id=2069&mode=song_hifi http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=178&song_id=2069&mode=song_lofi Aaron Keim... http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=218&song_id=768&mode=song_hifi http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=218&song_id=768&mode=song_lofi ...and finally, a little bit of a different take by me, played on a tenor uke... http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=2&song_id=2593&mode=song_hifi http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?band_id=2&song_id=2593&mode=song_lofi Anyhoo, the important thing is that if you're playing along with somebody else you both need to be on the same page no matter which variation of the melody you're using, with everybody using the same chord progression and melody or things could get kind of ugly.

Lots of variety! I have been listening the Zepps mp3s for Shady Grove (he plays the song about 9 times with different banjos) and he plays yet a slightly different version. Actually it sounds like the A part of his version is nearly identical to your version but he has added a B part. His B part is a nice addition but it might make singing along harder... culley

When you're playing OTM, the B part makes a great break on one of the between vocal verses repeats. Like most banjo tunes, they tend to change each time they are played (by the good players, not me, I still haven't got the improvising part down). I agree, Richard. This is a good co-op song!
